“I wanted to shoot and create a lot of photos that would make me proud. And just release them onto the world. Then go live away from everyone, under a rock, not hearing what anyone thought of the collectionâ€.
And that’s what 18-year-old Montel Joiner has embarked on, minus the rock.
Montel’s first experience with a camera was when he was in 2nd grade, but it wasn’t until fall of 2004 when he began to fully embrace everything about photography and began shooting seriously.
Montel has spent the last half year working on a collection of photographs that very few people have ever seen, until now.
They See But They Don’t: A Collection is a portfolio of over 50 beautiful, artistic, concept photographs taking by this young photographer from Illinois.
“They See But They Don’t†is just really how I felt about my work. I feel that there are so many photographers out there that get over looked just for the simple fact that there are so many photographers in general. It also digs into how I would feel after I would show some of my older work to people. I would feel bad because there were times where I would feel so impressed and happy with what I had done but I wouldn’t get the reaction that I wanted. So I thought, “forget itâ€, and I started working on this collection. I told myself I would just keep it to myself and show it all when I felt it was a good time to, keeping in mind that not everyone will see my work the way they shouldâ€.
They See But They Don’t is a great start for this soon to be art student. In the fall, Montel will begin studying Photography at the well-known private art school Columbia College in Chicago. Columbia is known for having one of the best Photography programs in the nation. By the look of his portfolio, Columbia will only expand the brightness of this photographer’s eye.
