It is the rare artist who can capture an audience's attention with only a piano or acoustic guitar. 23 year-old Vancouver singer/songwriter Ben Sigston crafts melodic gems that work as well stripped down as they do produced in the studio with a full band.
Equally at home on both guitar and piano, Sigston has a sound that has been favorably compared to the likes of Coldplay, Radiohead and John Lennon. Ben's first recordings feature songs filled with bright, tasteful piano playing, weeping Beatle-esque guitar lines, and instantly memorable vocal melodies.
While growing up in Vancouver, BC Ben's two passions were cross-country bike racing and songwriting. Both pursuits called for a solitary focus and a single-minded determination that have served him well. After graduating from high school, Ben felt an even greater pull towards music and began taking a more serious approach, working harder than ever on his songs.
From a young age his imagination was captured by some of the great singer/songwriters of the late 60's/early 70's. Citing The Beatles and Bob Dylan as influences, Ben also admires current artists who stand out from the crowd by daring to drift from the flavor of the day style and predictable songwriting formulas. Sigston explains, "I respect artists like Elliot Smith, guys who will write songs that are not obvious hits, and challenge their listeners. I admire the freedom in that kind of writing"
Seeing these contemporary troubadours as brothers in the world of song, Ben is an artist who breaks ground and doesn't simply wear his influences on his sleeve. It is this ability to incorporate the more abstract and marry it with the well-crafted pop song that makes Sigston such a unique addition to the current crop of singer/songwriters.
Currently in the studio recording and with a number of US labels expressing interest, the Vancouver based singer-songwriter has been hard at work compiling material and is looking forward to a debut album.
