About Me

Layout Created at Mspremade.com
Standard-issue ex-Transcona ex-Lutheran queergeek blogger, Flickr photographer, retired Friendsterwhore, choral singer, local gay/lesbian history researcher, Brokeback Mountain fanfic writer, and university reference librarian.I'm on a six-month research/study leave from my job as a reference librarian at the University of Manitoba, doing research and conducting interviews for a book I'm writing on the queer history of Winnipeg.
I'm spending some of my time lately on The Flu Clinic at CurEvents.com, watching the potential avian influenza pandemic unfold with mounting horror. I'm spending more of my time in the brokebackslash community on LiveJournal , where I read (and write) Jack/Ennis slash fiction.
I'm a tenor with The Rainbow Harmony Project , Winnipeg's gay and lesbian chorus. I've been with TRHP for seven years (off and on), and I've made many of my best friends through the chorus; one of whom happens to be a musician with Canada's Air Command Band . Tracks from both groups are on Last.fm for you to hear.
My musical tastes are eclectic, even downright bizarre. I listen to everything: Barenaked Ladies to Buena Vista Social Club, Edith Piaf to Erykah Badu, Fats Domino to Franz Ferdinand to Fanny Brice to Feist, Sex Pistols to Soweto Gospel Choir, Monty Python to Marlene Dietrich to Miriam Makeba to Michael McDonald, Amy Grant to Amy Winehouse, ABBA to ZZ Top, Eels to Elvis to Enya...
I especially like: African music, talented vocalists, multi-part harmony (I'm a total a cappella whore), Broadway showtunes, Bollywood and James Bond movie themes, pop, punk, classic rock'n'roll, Motown, cool smooth jazz, clever mashups, off-beat covers (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Palast Orchester mit Max Raabe, etc.) and just about anything Eighties. Oh, and did I mention I love musicals??
Oh, and I'm probably the world's biggest fan of an obscure Eighties vocal group called Fjedur, who recorded the 1986 album Freedom is Coming: Songs of Protest and Praise from South Africa. You can order a copy of it here (sorry, audio cassette tape only). I guess you could call it a carry-over from my Lutheran days.[/color] :-)
Yes, I'm the guy who came up with the idea for the the Flicky Awards just so you know who to blame ;-) but at the moment, I am administrator of only one flickr group, Avian Flu Watch .
Here's my last.fm profile .
Here are a couple of the photos I've taken which are on flickr:
