Judee grew up as a citizen of the world due to the nature of her father’s job that had her living and visiting many countries as early as age seven: the United States, United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Liberia, Equatorial Guinea, China and France. A native of Cameroon now settled in Switzerland, all these cultures have enriched and influenced Judee’s musical prowess. How cosmo can you get!!
After her first singing performance in front of a live audience in the 90’s, the “performer bug†bit Judee and this desire to entertain has stayed with her through the years. She has over the years gone through transformations: daughter - sister - chemist - trusted friend - reservoir engineer - wife – mother - lab technician. From out of the test-tube a new musical genre has been blended. A “Kemistry†of world influences from an offspring of the global village.
Often asked, "Why are you just appearing 'now'?", she replies, "It's always been there, it's always been me, masked by other just as important facets of me... I chose to live my life in this sequence and the entire journey, the people I've met, have made me so much stronger as a person and as an artist, giving me much more to write and sing about now."
Song writing came naturally to Judee. Her first was written at 16 (You hold the key). Some of her more recent compositions are flavoured with African rhythmic singing, background vocals and/or ethnic instruments to “ethnocise†them, if you will. When asked what style of music she’s keen on, she answers:" "Ethno Pop" …Judeemusic... music that flirts with various genres, ...music with flavour, spiced with "ethno" (Latino, Africano and Afro-Caribbean) yet keeping it more "pop" than "world".â€
Nicknamed “Judee Blue†for her soft spot for “non smooth sailing†love songs, Judee feels the need for musical empathy towards this human condition that we all are at some time of our life. A question often put to her is, “Your repertoire seems to cover a not-so-wide spectrum of issues and topics. Why is that?†Judee answers, “Songwriters have been known to write on anything from war and peace, to fun and entertainment. I love writing love songs. "Some could see this as the usual mindless introverted string of love songs put out there. But for me, this is less about my own feelings, thoughts, and motives and more about that of other people and the world around us. So yes, my songs tend to be less on the socio-political end of the spectrum, by choice.†“By the way, …amids my new songs, are songs with lyrics on friendship, fun and entertainment – all part of the human condition!! … Nothing on war, politics, and the like. That side of "us" I choose to not sing about!â€
The future holds a promise of true multiculturalism. For her part, Judee plans to continue to expand towards a similar musical dream. Her goal: to blend music, to cut across different genres from R&B, soul, funk, through rock, latin, jazz and reggae, all the while, and most importantly, staying in touch with Africa... and pop!
