On May 5th, 1993, three sweet eight year old boys went missing in the nondiscript town of West Memphis, Arkansas. Christopher Byers, Steve Branch and Michael Moore were last seen around 6:00 p.m. that afternoon. The next afternoon their small, battered, naked bodies were found submerged in a ditch located in a small patch of woods known as Robin Hood Hills. West Memphis police were ill equiped to handle this type of horrible crime. This crime was filled with mistakes, police incompetence and misconduct from the start. With very few leads and little evidence the police were feeling pressure to find the person or people responsible for such an unthinkable crime. Soon rumors of Satanic activity in the area spread like wildfire throughout Northeast Arkansas giving fuel to the misguided idea that the three children were killed in a Satanic ritual. Soon the police turned their attention to three teenage boys- Damien Echols, Jessie MissKelly, and Jason Baldwin. These young men had no connection to the victims or their families. They did not have a history of violence. Their only fault was being different, uneducated and poor. The police decided they were devil worshipers based on the way they dressed, the music they listened to and the books they read. Misskelly ( with an IQ of around 71)was "interviewed" for 12 by the police without parent or legal representation. Misskelly was led into a mistake filled confession by the police. This error ladden confession in which he later admitted was false and given under the heavy pressure of police was the only only thing that linked these young men to the crime. THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE FROM DAMIEN ECHOLS, JASON BALDWIN OR JESSIE MISSKELLY FOUND. ZERO EVIDENCE!!!! WITH NO EVIDENCE THESE MEN WERE CONVICTED OF MURDER. JESSIE WAS SENTENCED TO LIFE PLUS 40, JASON GOT LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE AND DAMIEN WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH! NO EVIDENCE. This is a very brief synopsis of this horrible and bizarre injustice- there is lots and lots more to this case. Please visit the links below and learn more. Educate yourself and then tell others.
