The City Is Mine

About Me

There are three things certain in life death, taxes, and Smooth City giving a stellar performance. Born an only child to two Trinidad and Tobago immigrants this 80’s baby is a special bred to say the least. Most men in their 20's are at night clubs having a good time enjoying the benefits of the local nightlife, but Chris is there for a different reason. Given the name Smooth City from his close associate James “Legasey” Doe, City is there on his own agenda as the entertainment. At such a young and tender age he has been able to manage a college degree in business management and marketing, along with captaining a 2006 Men’s Division II national championship team. Simultaneously while operating his own independent record label out of his hometown of Holbrook, New York; Smooth City Hustle.
“It’s really crazy when I think about it; I was a pretty decent soccer player so at the end of high school I knew I still wanted to play, I just knew I was not living the crew behind. I wanted to play soccer on a high level but not leave Long Island. I needed my crew and they needed me.” Dowling College was just the answer. You see City or C to his business associates and friends; he did not want to leave what he started with Get Open Records. “Man I had some pretty big time schools offer me full scholarships to attend, I in fact took the least amount of money offered to me to stay home and ride with my team” he said with a grin. It all stared in 11th grade at where else but a basement, he and his friend Michael Coppola started making music and searching for a record deal, realizing the type of road that was ahead they decided to sign them selves only to there own label Get Open Records. A year later they released their first project with DJ BoneshaKer under the group name AuReo. To date they have sold 4500 units worldwide respectively. “Man we were high school kids just doing what it do and look what we did, I am so proud of us for that.”
In 2004 two weeks before his best friend died in a tragic car accident City landed one of the Get Open’s biggest contracts to date, he signed an agreement with one of the tri-state areas largest and most respected promotional companies. This meant that DJ BoneshaKer would spin weekly at a night clubs and that in addition to being BoneshaKer’s management he would be the MC for the venue. “Two weeks before he passed he saw us there, I thank god he at least physically he got to see it for himself at least a piece.” With DJ BoneshaKer he has performed from the famous CPI in the Hampton Bays, to charity hospital events in upstate New York. To this day you can still see this modern day edition of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen at various clubs in New York.
With his music and his company City wants to represent The REAL. He feels he is what he is and he exemplifies that in any of his business relationships or music that come from Get Open Records. “I try to show me in everything I do, it may be a different side of but trust it’s me some stuff I take back to the days of Duke Ellington.” This is the same old school vibe he credits from the music that he has learned from his mother Nola, she taught him to learn from the hero’s from yesteryear. He has been caught grooving along to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, U2, and Michael Jackson; all they way up to his childhood influences of Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Kid N Play, Notorious BIG, 2Pac, Big L, his hip hop idol Jay-Z. “My goal through Smooth City Hustle is to bring back those feel good days to music.”
When asked “At the end of the day, what do you want people to get out of one of your works?” he simply replied “I always want people to say ‘that man C is what he displays’. I think I can make people feel great when I perform as a rapper/mc at a night club or they can feel great because of any individual in my crew, because I am also them.” Similar to New York this City does not sleep.
