Unsung Hero

My journey through this life is merely a reflection Of a collection of influences within my recollection And coming from that direction with a full head of steam Pouring into my personality as a strong and steady stream Are my vast memories of you, while growing up in a place That steals the souls from the weak and drowns them in disgrace I hear stories of hoop dreams, war, parties and hard times And the strength, depth and breadth existing within my family lines My earliest thoughts are of your strength, kindness, and will Of the jokes, games, and how proud you just made me feel To wear a last name that comes with its own battle scars But the struggle was never mine, the struggle was always ours My father, your brother, the same stories handed down Crabbing, fishing, barbequing all rushing back to me now And I appreciate them more than I ever did then You are way more than an uncle, you are a best friend A proud father of many, a proud uncle of more A proud sibling to all, a proud son of the Lord And I am sorry about the pillow incident; you know which one I mean An action of childhood jest, with consequences not foreseen Theres so many memories running through me too many to write down But this almost disrespectingly short piece captures the essence of their sound Your drive is part of the reason I was able to live and grow And strive and sing the praises of my uncle, the unsung heroBy Maxwell J.
