Mic, a young, driven, creative rap artist now arriving on San Francisco’s musical scene, grew up in the Lakeview district of San Francisco. Mic was born February 28th 1985 as Michael Arevalo. At an early age, Mic was forced to face many adverse challenges. Mic’s parents were facing their own personal problems and were rarely available to Mic and his brothers and sisters. The absence of “normal” family life, supportive parents and a stable home situation forced Mic to hit the streets at a very young age. He found that by joining up with his friends in the streets and by becoming part of the Lakeview gang, he now had a family of his own that he could count on and a means of supporting himself.
Street life has its dark side too, though the risks and consequences were not always easy to recognize. At first, Mic thought it was great to have a family of friends who understood and hung out with him. The loyalty, support and sense of family made him feel proud, important and needed. The thrills of the lifestyle including the fast money, women, parties and fast action can be addictive and deceiving like a narcotic. He felt powerful and invincible taking more and more risks each day. The raw reality is that no one is invincible. A fast action game is nothing more than that, a game. Finally, Mike shot the dice and crapped out.
Time for accountability, soul searching and Jail.
It was during Mic’s incarceration that he started soul searching and trying to discover who he was. Mic found he had a gift - the ability to dig into the depths of his heart and mind and express his thoughts and experiences on paper in a way that kept everything real. Mic stumbled upon rapping in his jail cell where he wrote his first verse for a gang member and close friend who passed away. He realized that his next step was to tie his material into music. Wow! Discovery! Mic found what his heart longed for. He also realized that to follow his dreams, he had to make some serious choices and commitments.
Breaking away from the street and gang life was the first of many difficult steps and choices that gave him the necessary freedom he needed to create and go forward in music. Ever since, Mic’s been hustling and grinding away tirelessly to create and to get his music heard.
He started performing at a few Community events including “Stop the Violence” rallies and “Peace in the Streets”. Mic has performed on television’s local access Channel 29 and has also been involved in “The DJ Project”, a hands-on, educational and performance environment for youth interested in audio production and hip-hop music.
Mic’s a creative young man with a good head on his shoulders and determined to take his music to the public. He is spiritually motivated and inspired by his newly adopted mother, who has become a large driving force in his life to create and follow his dreams rather than waste his time and life as he’d done in the past. Mic’s goals are results orientated - he prides himself on his ability to accomplish anything placed in front of him. “This is my life I’m dealin’ with. Music races through my veins and I ain’t gonna stop till I get my fame,” says Mic.
Mic can currently be heard on the DJ Project Presents The Draft Compilation. He and his fellow peers created all the music during the two-month project and performances are scheduled for October 2005.
Listen up, Mic’s coming out. His musical legacy has begun. Stay tuned!
