There’s always something special about Loxy & Ink’s HORSEMEN members: the ability to switch up styles, the hypnotic ebbs and flows of their bass, and the “fuck the mainstream, we do it our way” feel to each release from its members. Friske is a prime example of this aesthetic…
He might look like a new-comer in terms of his body of releases, don’t let that fool you: Friske has been a student of DnB since his formative years. Getting his start from a hardcore tape he received from his sister, he has been a fan of the sound since age 13. He was bitten by the DJ bug a few years later, ultimately landing on a weekly Kool FM London show in 2003. This stint triggered the need to produce, and he spent the following years honing his skills, working up the muster to pass a demo CD off to Ink, a move which proved correct – he has been in constant contact with Ink ever since. With subsequent tunes being passed to both Loxy & Ink, his spot within this elite crew was solidified, and he was brought to the forefront with “Troublesome”, a nasty, dark number that appeared on the sampler of the “Apocalypse” LP in 2005.
Things just took off from there: 2006 saw Friske land another tune on another HORSEMEN LP sampler (“Da Shinin’” on the “Revelations” album), but was also featured on the LP, with the rough “Villains” with frequent collaborator/affiliate Perpetuum (the 2xCD release also saw Friske’s “The Cypher” get a release). His track “Shattered” with Gremlinz was featured on Renegade Hardware’s “Carpe Diem” album, and the VIP to “Troublesome” came out on the Future Beats 6 mix CD. There is an EP slated for release on 13 Music entitled “Concrete Jungle”, but as of right now, the status of this monster is up in the air.
More moves have been made in 2007, the first being the forthcoming premiere release on Gremlinz’ Audio Decay label: Friske’s remix of “Ruthless” by Aspect will be rocking the AA side; that’s not the end of the story though: Phil Source Direct has signed a batch of Friske tunes, including “Breathless”, a jazzy, ‘Headz-y affair with Perpetuum that has to be heard to be understood, and will be felt by those who are harkening for that old time religion. That’s the thing about Friske: his style is both old and new, dark and fun, rough and smooth. He can take you into the murky depths of his mind, then bring you back out with a bouncy roller. He is wicked with collaborations, but don’t sleep on his solo work: he is just as deadly on his lonesome. With finished tunes with Loxy (“Bad Vibes”) and more work down the pipeline with Gremlinz and other HORSEMEN, one can only wonder where Friske will pop up next…
