Turnstyle is Viginia’s only music boutique that is strictly dedicated to the Turntable Lifestyle. The boutique opened it’s doors in mid 2003 and features newly released vinyl selections for DJ’s to CD’s and underground apparel for the enthusiasts. Owners and DJ’s Jesse Oremland & Joanna Willey (also known as Turnstyle Soundsystem – dj’s Jesse Split & JoAnna O.) found The Downtown Arts District to be the perfect place for their boutique in Richmond. Since 2003, the owners have seen a vast rise in neighborhood population and many of the abandoned and boarded up buildings have given way to new shops, art galleries and residential spaces.
Upon opening, Jesse & Joanna produced VA’s first all Electronic Music Festival held Labor Day Weekend in Festival Park, aptly titled “Evolve VA”. The festival was a major success and saw many local VA DJ’s on stage alongside some of the world’s most talented National DJ’s & Producers. In 2004, Turnstyle celebrated it’s first store anniversary by shutting down Broad Street during First Friday’s Artwalk to celebrate with Live music in the middle of street. Since then, Turnstyle also celebrated on the streets of Broad & Adams once again for another successful anniversary event in June 2006. The owners have found a home for Turnstyle in the Downtown Richmond and cannot think of a better place for their boutique. The owners enjoy their weekly Saturday night DJ residency on WRIR 97.3FM every Saturday night from 11pm – 1am since 2004. The pair also enjoy producing dance music events and have had success in their Richmond productions with "Analog" at Sauce in 2003 “Therapy” held at Mr. Bojangles on Friday nights in 2005, The 12 Inch dance parties (2006 @ The Hyperlink) , The Artwalk music events (2003- present), and their LIVE radio show “Frequency” on wrir 97.3fm. The Turnstyle Duo have been recognized for their efforts by Richmond Magazine, Richmond Times Dispatch, Style weekly & Innerloop, RVA Mag, & Bassline magazine for their dedication to making Richmond a more happening music spot in Virginia.
