Student Ben Gulley, 23, competed among 62 singers and was named Silver Medalist in the Collegiate Vocal Division of the Rotary Club of Tulsa’s Tenth Annual Crescendo Music Awards held April 10-12 in Tulsa, OK. Gulley won $2,500 for his performances of Handel, Mozart, and Puccini arias, accompanied at the piano by his voice teacher, Associate Professor of Music Dale Morehouse.Additionally, Gulley won the $2,500 Marilyn Inhofe Davis People’s Choice Award. At the final gala concert, the audience handed in ballots and chose Mr. Gulley as their favorite performer of the evening over pianists from Eastman, Manhattan School, and TCU, trombonists from Oklahoma State, violinists from San Francisco Conservatory, a cellist from Eastman, and singers from Baylor and Northeastern State.Earlier this semester, Gulley won the Hellam Young Artists Competition in Springfield MO, and will be returning there this coming Valentine's Day for a concert of Romantic Music. He also took second at the voice competition for the National Society of Arts and Letters. He anticipates graduating from UMKC in May and will return to the Conservatory this fall to pursue a Performer’s Certificate. He has been engaged by Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Kansas Concert Opera, and Lviv Opera Theater in Ukraine this coming season, amongst others.One review of his Crescendo performance stated "others performed their hearts out. One of the most moving performances was from a Mr. Ben Gulley, an outstanding tenor, attending University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Mr. Gulley won the silver medal in the vocal division, as well as the "People's Choice" award."
