About Me

I am very linguistically oriented. If I care about you, I've investigated the meaning of your name, variants in other languages (particularly ones I study or am conversant in), your native languages (if something other than English), the native languages of your family/ancestors. I have dissected the patterns of your speech and accent. This is a kind of love for me.
I am, at my core, very green. I love to be in places where there is an abundance of non-human life (particularly photosynthesising plant life). I prefer to use my feet, my bicycle, or public transport to get around, though I am very interested in the potential of bio-diesel. I eat less meat than most, and am sporadically vegetarian, because that reduces my impact on the ecosystem.
I'm not very black-and-white. I don't like when people try to distill sexuality into dual and opposite camps (gay, straight or lying, where lying isn't a real camp). Nor do I like when that is done with race, nationality, personal relationships (ah, the romantic/platonic divide; fine if it works for you, but it's really simplistic, and I find people assuming that I follow their rules), gender, sex (there are X chromosomes and there are Y chromosomes; people are a bit more complicated than just chromosomes), politics (I may be leftist in some ways, but I'm more conservative in some others than I'd care to admit to some people). People are simultaneously more complex and simpler than the consensus seems to suggest. I get tripped up in assumptions, certainly, but I respect myself, and you, much more if you at least try not to.
One of my weaknesses is that I rely too much on people being who I think they are.

My Interests

Green stuff, languages, being outside après la tempête, fulfilling and co-independent relationships, the night, gods, celtic culture, animism, food that tastes good, cannabis, afternoons at the beach, adventures, taking pictures.

I'd like to meet:

Stevie Nicks? Pretty please?

Music:

Marilyn Manson, Patti Smith, Jimi Hendrix (the Jimi Hendrix Experience albums are the best/my favourites, especially Electric Ladyland), Jewel, Texas, Bob Dylan, Tori Amos, the Dandy Warhols, Kula Shaker, the Beatles (and George and John's solo careers), Hawksley Workman, the Tea Party, the Postal Service, Sarah Slean, the Cardigans, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (original cast recording, official soundtrack), the Police (not so much Sting as a solo artist, but he's okay), Cypress Hill, Radiohead, Moxy Früvous, Joan Osborne, Lenny Kravitz, Josie and the Pussycats (the 'band' assembled for the movie, with the singer from Letters to Cleo), Sigur Rós, the Be Good Tanyas, U2, Sinéad O'Connor, Rage Against the Machine, Johnny Cash, Garbage, Death Cab for Cutie, Aesop Rock, Dead Kennedys, Air (particularly the stuff they did for The Virgin Suicides), Elastica, Atmosphere, Robyn, Brother Ali, Björk, Eve, Bran Van 3000, Esthero, Clann Zú, Everlast, the Gossip, Mazzy Star, Sloan, Zero 7, Swollen Members, Milla Jovovich, Psycho Realm, the Rolling Stones (though I haven't bought any of their albums, due to their hypocrisy about intellectual property rights), silverchair, Tricky, White Stripes.

I love mashups. Artists I enjoy include Pheugoo, Party Ben, Go Home Productions, dj BC, Soulwax. DJ Danger Mouse did a wicked job on the Grey Album, some tracks more than others (given how restricted his focus was, I think he did really really well).

Television:

Futurama, Third Watch, The Tribe, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Red Dwarf, Roswell, Star Trek, Weird Homes, stuff that's on APTN (Aboriginal People's Television Network), The Simpsons.

Books:

Including but not limited to the works of: Edward Abbey, Rabbie Burns, Neil Gaiman, William Gibson, Robert A Heinlein, Nalo Hopkinson, Derrick Jensen, Anaïs Nin, Daniel Quinn, Robert J Sawyer, Robert William Service, Patti Smith, James Tiptree Jr, John Varley, Élisabeth Vonarburg, Charles de Lint.
