The Agape Contemporary Dance group was formed in March 23 2001, under the direction of Mayra Ortega and the Director assistant Ana Cuellar, It has been, from its beginning, loyal to the contemporary dance proposition and to showing the public trained and capable bodies, as well as serious choreographies of a quality which has gained them recognition at a state, national and bi-national level.
It has also been the birth place of great artists who are now part of international shows, for example: Ana Cuellar who is now a performer of La Nouba Cirque du Soleil in Orlando, Florida; Mayra Palacios who is a member of the Cadiz, Spain ballet; and its current members are graduates from the Scenic Arts Faculty College of the U.A.N.L. (Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon) and have received scholarships and recognition, in addition to have been participants in itinerant functions of state (State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico) counties, fairs, festivals, “book fairsâ€, national award ceremonies, private events, didactic functions, altruist functions, and other events, always with the goal bringing a message through contemporary dance, and to bring a moment of spiritual joy to the audience. Agape, as its name indicates, means to give the best that one can give with the purest and most altruistic love to art and most of all to dance.
Its members, besides being licensed in Contemporary Dance, have been trained in many other techniques such as Graham Limon, Ballet, Cunningham, Ledder, “Barra Piso†(floor bar), acrobatics, amongst other, to be able to achieve versatility of movement that the contemporary thematic requires; for which they have been able to participate in metropolitan encounters of Contemporary dance in Nuevo Leon state since its beginnings and until now. They were semifinalists in the “Premio INBA-UAM†in Mexico D.F. in 2001; and in the “Extremadura Binacional Mexico-Estados Unidos†(Extreme Bi-National Mexico-United States) in 2005 they obtained first prize to the best costume design and to the best female interpreter (Mayra Ortega).
