Behind the desolate, frayed appearance of front-man Paul David lie the reflective thoughts that are the powerhouse behind the recent rise of a local music sensation. In the spring of 2004, just after his high school graduation, David began assembling the pieces to what would become Celeste, a continuously evolving entity that has given Davids philosophic lyrics a chance to be heard by a growing audience of local music listeners.
In the fall of 2003, David joined forces with friend Kenny Muto and brother Joel Merritt not for the purposes of starting a band, but simply to raise funds for cancer research in their schools benefit show. The trio didnt immediately begin practicing together, but there was an obvious chemistry amongst them. After good reviews from their peers, the students put a little more effort into practicing for the same show the following year. Instead of performing covers songs, the group used the 2004 benefit show to debut the brilliant music that David had been engineering for years. The show was a huge success for the newly affiliated band and kick-started a local phenomenon that has been rapidly flourishing ever since.
Since that modest launch two years ago, Celeste! been played on numerous radio stations such as Star 94 in Atlanta and has shared the stage with numerous national and semi-national acts including Acceptance, Gatsbys American Dream, Cartel, Spitalfield, The Audition, Across Five Aprils, Evergreen Terrace,Chiodos, My American Heart,The Honorary Title, Emanuel, and Yellowcard and were also picked to play the Atlanta Warped Tour stop. Their growing online fan base, which currently numbers well over 12,000, plays their songs an average of 500-1000 times each day on the national addiction that is MySpace. This boom in popularity can only be explained by the four young and talented individuals who mesh to make the bands matchless cross between rock and pop with hints of punk flare.
The head of the group, of course, is David, 22. His hopeful songwriting is packed with captivating hooks, but not to the degree that it takes away from the artistic value. Its an interesting collage that, mixed with Davids distinctively pure voice, makes for a catchy, melodic sound. Muto, a 19-year-old guitarist, and Merritt, a 19-year-old bassist, make up the rest of Celestes front line of vocals and strings. The tattoo clad, Chris, like clockwork sets the tone in the back on drums. The 20-year-old recently joined the band after moving from Newnan, Georgia.
The four bond to make a nostalgic sound of yearning. The bouncy guitars offset the steady upbeat rythyms before crashing into Davids bombastic voice, causing a rippling effect of nice. Simply put, Celeste encompasses the meaning of classic ballad rock. Quietly waiting underground at the moment, they are about to take flight, as they are expanding into a radio-friendly, professional quality band.
