FLORIDA'S BEST KEPT SECRET

About Me

A couple of these songs on this page are from a few years back when my friend Owen was going through a terrible divorce. I guess you could say there is a little bit of my own personal shit in there too. I had gone through my own divorce a couple years earlier. PRE WARNING, at the time of these songs, I hated what his wife did to him and I really was just writing lyrics from what he was telling me over the phone late at night when he couldn't sleep!. Hey, It was fucked up and I had to be there for him, I wanted to be there for him, because you see, He was there for me. Thats how it works! So yah, you could say he spewed his turmoil, anguish and frustration and living fucking nightmare in one ear and I let it come out through "Fight of my life" and "Lonely". Walked Away and Whore of Satan were also inspired from the pain of Divorce. Writing these songs were like therapy for me, a way of dealing with all my anger. To this day, it's hard to listen to these songs without getting choked up. Actually, "FIGHT OF MY LIFE" cracks me up! (Sounds a little like Zappa, ya think he would be proud?) Anyway, it doesn't get much more personal then that. Thank God WE CAN get past the pain to the other side!........ There is life after divorce!
Drew Preston, born Drew Preston Kushner started playing guitar at the age of 11. Played in various rock bands in New York during his teens. Drew’s playing took a turn towards jazz when He studied with Joe Carbone, A great session player from New York and Music Director at Five Towns College.
Formally a touring and studio musician around the northeast during his twenty's, Drew relocated to South Florida after numerous attempts at being discovered in New York. Drew recalls, " At one point, I couldn't even get a gig, let alone a high profile one. I auditioned for several international acts. They didn't want any part of me. Everyone knew I had a drug problem except me!" It didn't matter how well I played. I wouldn't have lasted two weeks on the road." Drew, a full time father of two boys, now boasts his sobriety with just celebrating 19 years clean."Thats truly a miracle, claims close friend Owen McDonald and old writing partner, If Drew could get clean, then anyone can... trust me I know Drew"
Drew has played with some great players over the years like, Hiram Bullock, Delmar Brown, and jammed with everybody from Rick Derringer to Micheal Bolton
Drew’s lead guitar style implies beautiful melody between blistering improvisational solos. A sought after session guitarist during the eighties, He now plays with several bands now working in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area.
Guitarist/Songwriter/Producer, Drew Preston is part owners of a Fully Digital Mac based Recording Studio “ The Shed” which is the sole springboard for Sliceomedia Productions. “The Studio is my sanctuary, where I write and record my tunes”. with help from Gary Berman on drums, I think Gary learned how to play before he even knew how to walk. and Phil Bithell, the Mac God and engineer. Phil'S also the keyboard player with The Funk U Band. "At this stage of my life, I’m very fortunate to have found these guys, They go the extra mile and are my BIGGEST supporters"……….Sounds like they got it goin on!!!!!

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: myspace.com/funkuband
Band Members: .. My Originals are just me playing all the tracks, except the drums and percussion which were played by Gary Berman. These days you can catch me playing live with FUNK U. a heavy dance funk/rock band. that was formed by mike and myself. The material were playing is not your average run of the mill bar band type music. It's more like top 40 from the seventy's but no matter what song we play, we absolutely tear it up and put our funk/ rock fusion twist on it. it's very high energy. We are booked solid and you should be able to catch up with us. you wont be dissapointed.
Influences: Pretty much everything I ever heard. But to name a few: Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton, Tommy Bolin, Rory Gallagher, Neil Young, Greatfull Dead, Allman Bros. Lynyrd Skynard, Charlie Daniels, ZAPPA!!, Robin Trower, Beatles, Miles Davis, Sly And The Family Stone, Steely Dan, Allan Holdsworth, Tony Williams Lifetime,“believe it” , John Scofield, Mike Stern, Hiram Bullock, Jaco.,Delmar Brown, Daryll Dobson,John Mcglaughlin, Return to Forever, Larry Carlton, Steve Morse, Brecker Bros. Joe Perry,Bill Bruford, Brand X, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Eric Clapton, Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Wes Montgomery,Led Zeppelin.

I gotta tell ya, that there's these two guys that were more influential to my playing then anyone I just mentioned. My close friends to this day from Junior High school. Richard Holler and Owen McDonald., Both very talented song writers. What they did for me was to turn me on to the right music to listen to and to stay clear of the assholes that I thought were my friends. You could say, and I mean this, man, They had saved my life and started me on my musical path. Rich was the one that turned me on to Electric Lady land. I still remember that day standing in his driveway, cause I wasn't allowed in his house when his mom wasn't home. Owen turned me on to all his older Brother Stevens album collection,( only Steven wasn't supposed to know that we were all up in his collection). he he he I guess he knows now.! sorry Owen. Owen, was and still is, an amazing lyricist and writes lyrics as witty as anyone I had ever heard. Owen is a successful writer today and Rich, well HE is /PUPPET TRUTH. He is in my top friends list.check him out when you get a chance.

Sounds Like: A combination of all my influences. I would say blues and pentatonic's is my roots and basis of my playing. But I hear more than that. I can be clean like Stevie Ray, Hiram or Stern or I can be smooth like Carlos, Carlton and Luke. I just try to be Tastey and sing what I'm playing.
Record Label: You mean Record Company's still exist!?
Type of Label: None
