I get all jittery like a jonesing crack-fiend when I hear about the sky dumping out the white stuff somewhere. So why the fuck do I stay in San Diego you ask? 1). Employment. There's not a lot of high paying theatre gigs in ski-towns...like the terms high paying and theatre gig go together either! 2). Moving anywhere I could get my fix would be bad...really bad...like not paying rent, going into huge debt, unable to hold a job and eventually move back in with the parents bad....So I mentioned my job. I'm a theatrical sound designer. For the last 13 years (yes, I've actually been with the same fucking company for that long), I've been working for The Old Globe theatre in San Diego. In 2000, I became the Globe's Sound Director, Resident designer, and Designated Malcontent. I also pretend to freelance all over the country as a member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829. To put it bluntly, I listen to music all day, design PA's, create sound effects, sweet-talk the fabulous ladies from the USD MFA program into performing salacious acts in front of a mic for my listening pleasure, and perform the everpopular "other duties as assigned" that typically get thrown at salary types. I love it, I'm fortunate to be making my living at it, but it's not my life...currently figuring out how to balance work and pleasure a bit more...will get back to you on that one.
