By growing up during The “Golden age†of Hip-Hop, Depakote whose birth name is Erik Lopez was heavily influenced by one of the greatest eras in Hip-Hop History. At a young age, Depakote was intrigued by the sound and impact that the Hip-Hop culture had on society. In junior high Depakote started pop locking and would recite moves off the classic 80’s movie Beat Street. Soon after Depakote would enter high school and start writing rhymes with local buddies. During the late 90’s, Hip-Hop went through a stage where the music was not as pure as the “Golden age†age was. Depakote went through different routes to find pure Hip-Hop music. He ran across a movement called Underground Hip-Hop where they would rebel on commercialism on The Hip-Hop Culture. Analyzing the techniques of his favorite producers, Depakote was open to a new lifestyle and, a new outlook on music. Depakote would expand his musical taste to all music of the world. Depakote found a craft called “Crate digging†in which the person would go through vinyl records and find samples and create their own music out of it.
