Matthew Martz grew up outside a very music-conscious Atlanta and began playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 15. After dabbling in the Athens scene, Matthew spent time simply living life, reading books that would later shape his lyrical direction, and honing his skill in both guitar and creative song-crafting. He has emerged today with a fresh EP of original music, a broad poetic repertoire, and a dream to match.
In many ways, Matthew is an "everyman's musician". Like all of us, he gets up every day, works a normal job, and seeks for life in the pages between dawn and dusk. And like all of us, Matthew has had his share of both wonder and pain, longing and relief. At it's core, his music is an attempt to capture the emotional essence of life..to interpret its meaning...and to offer songs for the hunger it creates.
Matthew's instrumentation is both electric and acoustic, yielding intensity and sensitivity to his sound. The poetry is admittedly impressionistic, allowing the deepest meaning of the songs to come more through emotion than intellect. Being a lover of a wide variety of rock, pop, and acoustic flavors has shaped Matthew's sound into a level combination of each. His strongest musical influences to date include indie popsters like Jump, Little Children & Ben Harper, traditional songsmiths like Bruce Hornsby & James Taylor, and jam-heavy melodeers like The Allman Brothers & Blues Traveler. And don't be surprised if you notice a little southern salt--Matthew's been in Atlanta his whole life. Enjoy!
