Craig Winston is a professional guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter based in Portland, Oregon. Craig describes his approach to the guitar as a modern interpretation of a classic instrument. Blending melodic leads, with colored chords and subtle virtuosity, Winston designs a guitar sound that is all his own. "I try to think of the electric guitar as a sort of analog synthesizer that I can use to create a vast expanse of sounds with a slight change in articulation or a drastic variation in effect modulation." The guitarist tastefully implements this style in his modern rock and electronic projects like the electro-punk outfit The Gentry and his solo project, The Fire at Endsville, which he describes as gothic/power-pop.
Influenced by a wide range of rock guitarists like Tim Skold, Pasi Sipila, Jimmy Gnecco and Butterfly Boucher; Craig also cites Hubert Sumlin, Dan Balmer, and Joe Pass amongst his guitar heroes. Consequently this is one guitarist who manages to express himself in very modern terms while still reserving traditional musical vocabulary for the appropriate situation. He has worked with his brother, award-winning Chicago-based composer, Mark Winston; up-and-coming alternative/folk singer-songwriter Anna Morsett; and the ever prolific electronic music mastermind, Larry Prophecy. He's written a number of works that diverge from his gothic rock stylings; most notably the blues anthem "The Howlin' Wolf" and "My Ghost Liendre, "a soulful ballad that showcases his talents as a vocalist and lyricist.
His most recent academic study of guitar has been with Mike Pardue and Dan Balmer; covering Jazz, rock, and funk styles. Previously, Craig studied jazz guitar with Mark White and John Baboian at Berklee College of Music; and classical and flamenco styles with Carl Bernstein at New Mexico Highlands University.
Craig Winston is very much an industry creative who strives to implement his non-musical talents into his career in anyway possible. His degree in English has led him to music criticism. He has written a number of album and artist reviews in addition to various essays on current industry concerns. These writings can be found in his personal blog at http://blog.myspace.com/urielico. "I'm also a huge tech geek," Craig says with a mix of pride and shyness. "I spend a good lot of time learning recording software and tinkering with all sorts of music and computer gear. I've also become sort of a specter that haunts Portland computer and music stores; you'll usually find me ogling the effects pedals and audio interfaces."
Winston hopes to harness this curiosity and try his hand at computer based music production. His work as a producer can be heard on The Fire at Endsville demo tracks; which were recorded and produced with Cakewalk and Ableton Live on his home computer in 2007. All these things are culminating in a plan to create an artist management/music production/promotion montage of a company with his brother, the prodigious web/graphic designer and musical genius, Mark Winston. The company is tentatively called A Song Cycle for Midnight.
