THE TRANCE ARENA
- For fans of Trance music everywhere!
First off a big thanks for taking the time out to have a look at my profile.
Enjoy what you read and don't be a stranger!!!
A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.... I started mixing back in 2002 after returning from travelling overseas. A love for dance music started late in the day having come from a background of rock and goth music, listening to the likes of The Mission, Sisters of Mercy, Metallica, Anthrax and The Cult.
It was while listening to the changing sound of goth band Rosetta Stone that I was drawn to the more dance orientated tracks that they were producing. The industrial sound helped me broaden my music taste. From there it wasn't long before I became drawn to the likes of 'FatBoy Slim' 'Chemical Brothers' and 'Leftfield'.
The first big clubbing 'experience' came when myself and a group of other likeminded souls went to see the 'Chemical Brothers' @ Brixton Academy in 1999.
One of those moments you always remember happened the moment 'Hey Boy, Hey Girl' was played and was marked by the comment to my compatriots 'Why don't we do this every weekend?'
From then on it was regular visits to The Fridge in Londons Brixton for 'Escape from Samsara', 'Return to the Source & 'Pendragon'. Or journeys down to Portsmouth for 'Gueshky' at the Wedgewood rooms. The influence to begin DJing started there. Watching the likes of Billy Nasty, Dave Clarke, The Liberators, Nick Warren and any number of Trance DJs nurtured the mixing bug.
The 1210 MKIIs were purchased in 2002 on my return from travelling and after taking a month course in DJing @ Point Blank studios I've carried on and not looked back since.
I've played at various House Parties with an ever changing style that ranged from Prog House through to Breaks, Trance and Hard Dance.
The first big night out I've played was upstairs at the Japanese restaurant called Koisihi. B2B with fellow dj Ad's we played a set of Trance and Hard Dance to a banging crowd of party goers for over two hours.
As a long time member of the DJ Source forums I to the opportunity to join their online radio station, playing regulary for a year every Tuesday night 8.30-9.30PM.
In 2005 he was asked to play at an event at the Asylum bar in London for a party where my blend of Prog House, Electro and Techno went down a storm with the crowd.
Though not the most technical DJ, it's the energy, the surprises and downright pumping level of a BenJoss set that brings the real enjoyment. I like to think that I know what makes a crowd bounce, what takes them up and what takes them down again. The real love in this game comes from keeping the crowd happy and creating that journey for them.
....as always Nice Apples!

My Interests

Music and Mixing is top of the list...any chance, nay any excuse to go out dancing as well.
Snowboarding! Which I was really enjoying. However I broke my wrist riding back in April 2006 at the Snowbombing week in Austria... So Snowboarding is currently postponed until I can afford to go again and get my confidence back.
Cooking, Thai, Chinese or anything really and eating what I've cooked.
PIRATES!!!! Nuff said!!!!..

A bit of a Comic/Sci-Fi geek as well. Probably know too much about that sort of stuff than is good for my kudos.

I'd like to meet:

Fellow DJs and dance music fans.
Also should a promoter wander by looking for some raw new talent, then they wouldn't go far wrong by asking me...

Where I've Played:
The George Open Decks Night, London
Koishi, London
Asylum, London
Industry, London

DJ Mixes
May Mix: Shades of Techno & Trance
A full banging mix of Techno into Hard Trance. Just the way I like it.

Sundays on the Beach: A rare Prog mix from me.
A more chilled Prog mix with house and trance. Perfect afterclub tunes.

Both of these mixes are still available on request. Just send me a message if you'd like a copy and I'll send you the links or a CD.

Music:

There's very little music I won't listen to and I'm proud of being able to listen to most music.
I'm a huge fan of Frank, Dean and Sammy the Rat Pack. On top that I'm happy listening to Metallica, Snow Patrol, Feeder, Gomez, The Killers, Athlete, Foo Fighters, you name it I probably listen to it. How's that for diverse!

I love all EDM from Trance & Techno through to Drum and Bass, Breaks, Prog House, again you name it and I'll probably like it.
In a typical BenJoss mix you'll hear a fusion of Electro, Techno, Trance and possibly some Breaks all thrown in. Having started as a Trance DJ I've tried to add as many elements to my mixes as possible. I try to fuse the best elements of all EDM into a set
It keeps a mix interesting, exciting and keeps the surprises coming.

Movies:

The Crow, Human Traffic, Star Wars, Batman Begins and pretty much any Superhero films or anything with Pirates in it will do!

Television:

Spaced, The League of Gentlemen, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Alan Partridge.

Books:

Again too many. I love to read.
Might I suggest that you read The Memory, Sorrow and Thorn books by Tad Williams and the Song of Fire and Ice books by George RR Martin.
For a book that makes you think then 'The Way of the Peaceful Warrior' by Dan Millman.
I'm also a huge fan of HP Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos with all the writers that have contributed to them.

Heroes:

My Dad and I guess he will never truly understand why...but he should, top, top geezer!!!
Also Pirates. Pirates are the greatest heros anyone can have.
Why? Because they Arrrrrrrrghhhhh!!!
Pirates Rock my world, 'nuff said!
Heroes and influences from the music world are many...
Leftfield, Billy Nasty, Eddie Halliwell, Chemical Brothers, Rosetta Stone, 2ManyDjs, DJ Yoda, Gomez, Sisters of Mercy, Dean Martin, Pete Yorn...the list could go on.
