Music pours in and out of my brain, all day long, waking and dreaming. Can't help it-- I suspect it's inprinted on a cellular level. Every Monday I get to inflict my tastes on WFMU listeners, and frequently have live musical guests perform on the show. What you hear is a dreamy blend of music which reflects the gentle kind of life I wish I had as chaos swirls around me. I've been a DJ/Program host off and on since 1972, love to mix live music on the radio and admit to being an unrepentant collector of all kinds of music, with psych-folk being a particular favorite. I've even dabbled a little bit with writing and performing my own music, but I find I prefer being on the presentation side.
The radio bug bit me in the 70's while attending Morristown High School (NJ), which owned a 10-watt student-run station ( WJSV ). Around that same time I made my first tentative steps toward becoming a recording engineer by taping local folk singers at a coffeehouse for later broadcast.
Years later, following a grossly unsatisfying start in the commercial broadcast world, I realized my heart was in non-commercial radio. In 1986 I joined the DJ staff at WFMU and have been quietly producing the kind of radio that has sadly disappeared from most other stations. After over 20 years with WFMU I still find great music I want to share with the listeners.
Summer of 1994 I began a long and happy run at WNYC Radio . Among my many tasks as a Senior Broadcast Engineer, the main one being technical director of Soundcheck (which includes mixing all the audio for the show), I am a part of the concert crew for New Sounds and other live music broadcasts and recordings.
My home is in New York City with husband Peter Keepnews and kitties Gracie and Nica. (Nolan now resides in his Golden City beyond time.)
My life's a constant work in progress, never finished.
