People have been wondering about my road trip to Eagle Idaho. A late start of 11AM was the result of tracking down a copy of Road Food; years ago I learned that tasty food rarely just happens. Between L.A. and Mammoth the book did not recommend one restaurant so, like someone shipwrecked traveling at 80 mph, I survived on water and the fruits and berries I brought with me. Somewhere on the 395, for dinner, I stopped to get a sandwich at Subway. The old chef stopped sprinkling olives onto my sandwich to quickly bat his ear and then told me “the gnat bite can hurt.” When I had entered, a truck parked next to my car was noticeably engulfed in gnats and when I got back, my car too was inside a freaky dense cloud of carnivorous gnats feeding on the feast I had delivered to them on the front and windshield of my car. A few hours later, stopped for gas, I almost had to play hopscotch to cross the pavement to avoid thousands of Mormon crickets walking on the ground, like the calm in the eye of a plague of locust that the cashier said had “come into town to party.” These two major insect incidence, and then there was the earthquake in L.A., people might see these as signs, maybe even signs of apocalyptical portent. Not me.Well, enough about me...
