Mystery is not beautiful, merely challenging. Discovery is beautiful

About Me

Science nerd, introvert, naturalist, freethinker, skeptic.

My Interests

The sciences in all shapes and forms (and particularly herpetology, which is my profession and hobby); Music in most forms (see below); Playing the piano; Philosophy...as in philosophical discussions and ideas, not the crazed rantings of long dead men; Hiking and camping (though it does not get cold enough in FL); canoeing and all other outdoor activity. And of course, my turtles.

I'd like to meet:

Carl Sagan, Warren Zevon, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine. Some live people would be nice as well.

Music:

Most forms of rock, especially seventies progressive. Emerson Lake & Palmer, Warren Zevon, Moody Blues, Brian Eno, Alan Parsons Project, Renaissance, The Raspberries, Sheryl Crow, The Doors, Dan Fogelberg, Elton John, Rickie lee Jones, Wall Of Voodoo, Yes, Stevie Wonder, countless others... Also love jazz (old and new), classical, ambient, celtic... Big fan of soundtracks...Angelo Badelamente, Ennio Morricone, Jon Vangelis, Phillip Glass, John Williams rules.

Movies:

Had better be good enough to offset the horror that is the modern movie theater experience. Jesus Christ Superstar, Close Encounters..., The Road Warrior, Fight Club, To Sir With Love

Television:

Don't own one.

Books:

Mostly science non-fiction like Sagan, Shermer, Gould and Hitchens but also Stephen King and the like. Sometimes vacation from my heavier reading with a bit of Star Trek fiction. Lots of trade publications (zoo/herpetology/herpetoculture) and science mags.Recommendations: non-fiction; Cosmos, Demon Haunted World, Pale Blue Dot, Brocca's Brain all by Carl Sagan, Why People Believe Weird Things by Michael Shermer, Wonderful Life and any essays by Stephen Jay Gould, Return To Soddom and Gomorrah by Charles Pellegrino, The Head Of God by Keith Ledler, Moses And Monotheism by Sigmund Freud, The End Of Faith and Letter To A Christian Nation by Sam Harris. Fiction; The Stand by Stephen King, The Mists Of Avalon by Marion Z. Bradley, Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins, short stories of H.P. Lovecraft. More as I think of them...

Heroes:

I admire the intellect and talent of many but hero worship is for those who have given up.

My Blog

New Bike and much sensless, self explorational rambling

Well, that last trip to VA settled it. I have traded in my Honda 750 for a VTX 1300R. Very similar looking style but a bit bigger, heavier and quite a bit more powerful. I stopped by just to look i...

Perhaps there IS a god...

Yesterday, I attended a wedding. It was held in a courtyard at a yacht club but the ceremony was christian of some variety. I had not been to a church or to a religious ceremony in a few years...the...

Life changes

I'll be moving at the end of the month...making a change. I've lived most of my life in near-downtown historic districts and here I am moving to the northside, near the zoo. I am renting part of a h...

Our future...our children

It is hard to know how accurate various predictions of global warming can be but below seems to be the best guess we have. Notice the dates. For those who have young children or who plan to have the...

Strange Night For Steve

I'd like to relay a fairly long story here about an evening I experienced only a few weeks ago. Now I've had a pretty tame social life so maybe this sort of thing is not so unusual for some of you. ...

For Wendy's Birthday

Wendy and I did stuff together when we were young but were not really that close until I entered seventh grade. She tried to help me out of my shell a bit and we supported each other through the soci...

Solid thought that quickly dissolves into sensless rambling

I'm a bit curious about many things but this one has come to me just recently while walking. The enigma that is the right wing, conservative element in our country feels that abortion for any reason ...

Follow up

I finally bought another copy of my favorite non-fiction book, "The Demon Haunted World" by Carl Sagan. Had I not read Sagan's "Cosmos" already, this would have been the book that really turned me on...
