Division of Planes is a New York-based band who balances noise with jagged melodies in a tense and angular manner. Featuring ex-members of Knife Skills and Plowhound, Division of Planes recorded the tunefully dissonant and rhythmically-dissected "Disarray" as an mp3 single with engineer Ted Young at Water Music in October of 2005 and have just completed recording their debut EP, Trembling Wires, with Scott Norton at Brooklyn's Headgear studios.
A plane can be divided into equal or unequal parts, and so can a song. Noise can be introduced to divide and dissect melodies. Sonic elements can touch, join, overlap, or interpenetrate. The slight displacement of core song components leads to interesting effects, but the original shape of the plane, or song, must remain recognizable. These are the first principles of the Division of Planes.
No single aspect from Jawbox, Unwound, Chavez, Archers of Loaf, Hot Snakes, At the Drive-in, Treepeople, Gang of Four, Refused or the Jesus Lizard dominates Division of Planes, and yet fans of these bands will have something to hang their ear on.
