The musical composition of Dues Ex Machina is nothing short of stunning. The Surmen sound is a contemporary trip-hop feel interlaced with polyrhythmic lyrics that advance local hip-hop. Tracks like “I Wish You Well†and “Rise of the Swamp God†capture the very motive of the band, while highly-intense and energetic vocals manhandle the speakers from which they are played. With an album as exotic, unique and ultimately progressive as Dues, the artwork however does not do the music justice and ultimately removes feeling. When your eyes are closed enjoying the Surmen’s latest album, envision your own artwork to how you see fit.
