Indy's Equipment and other Stuff.... The leather jacket - a hybrid of the "Type 440" and the A-2 jacket, made by Wested Leather Co. The bag - a modified Mark VII British gas mask bag. The whip - a 10ft Bullwhip crafted by David Morgan (although different lengths were used in specific stunts) The pistol - usually a World War I era revolver. Examples include the Webley Mk VI (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), or a .45 ACP Smith & Wesson Hand Ejector 2nd model revolver (Raiders of the Lost Ark). He has also been seen using a M1917 revolver, and a 9mm Browning Hi-Power. The shoes - "Indy Boots" made by Alden Shoes, which are still sold today (though in a lighter shade of brown than seen in the movies). Jones' Fedora and Leather Jacket (as used in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) are on display at the Smithsonian's American History Museum in Washington, D.C. The collection of props and clothing from the films has become a thriving hobby for some aficionados of the franchise
Indiana Jones is modeled after the strong-jawed heroes of the matinée serials and pulp magazines that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg enjoyed in their childhoods (such as the Republic Pictures serials, and the Doc Savage series). The two friends first discussed the project in Hawaii around the time of the release of the first Star Wars film.Spielberg told Lucas how he wanted to direct a James Bond film - Lucas responded that he "had something better than that".
The character was originally named Indiana Smith, after an Alaskan malamute Lucas owned in the 1970s ("Indiana"); however, Spielberg disliked the name "Smith", and Lucas casually suggested "Jones" as an alternative.

Lucas co-founded the studio American Zoetrope with Coppola — whom he met during the internship at Warner Brothers — hoping to create a liberating environment for filmmakers to direct outside the perceived oppressive control of the Hollywood studio system. From the financial success of his films American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977), Lucas was able to set up his own studio, Lucasfilm, in Marin County in his native Northern California. Skywalker Sound and Industrial Light and Magic, the sound and visual effects subdivisions of Lucasfilm, respectively, have become among the most respected firms in their fields. Lucasfilm Games, later renamed to LucasArts, is highly regarded in the gaming industry. The animation studio Pixar was founded as the Graphics Group, one third of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm. After years of remarkable research success, and key milestones in films such as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan[3] and Young Sherlock Holmes[3], the group was purchased in 1986 by Steve Jobs shortly after he left Apple Computer. Jobs paid US $5 million to George Lucas and put US $5 million as capital into the company. The sale reflected Lucas' desire to stop the cash flow losses associated with his 7 year research projects associated with new entertainment technology tools, as well as his company's new focus on creating entertainment products rather than tools. When Steve Sansweet, Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations at Lucasfilm, was asked about the proposed two films post-Return of the Jedi he stated that it was a misunderstanding of what Lucas was explaining. Since his introduction in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark (later retitled on VHS and DVD box covers as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark), he has made appearances in two more feature films, a three-season TV series, dozens of novels, comic books, video games, role-playing games, and even his own amusement park rides.Feature films Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, was first introduced in the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark, set in 1936. He is portrayed as an adventurous throwback to the 1930s film serial treasure hunters, with an alter ego of Professor Jones, a respected archaeologist at a New England college. In this first adventure, he is pitted against the Nazis, traveling the world to prevent them from recovering the Ark of the Covenant (see also Biblical archaeology).The 1984 prequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, set in 1935, took the character into a more horror-oriented story, skipping his legitimate teaching job and globe trotting, and taking place almost entirely in India. The show featured a standard formula of a 93-year-old Jones (George Hall) introducing a story, and then an adventure with either a 17-year-old Jones (Sean Patrick Flanery) or a 10-year-old Jones (Corey Carrier). Historical figures featured on the show include Leo Tolstoy, Pancho Villa, Charles de Gaulle, and John Ford, in such diverse locations as Egypt, Austria-Hungary, India, China, and the whole of Europe. One such episode of the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles features an introduction by Harrison Ford, reprising his role as Indiana Jones for the episode, Young Indiana Jones and the Mystery of the Blues.The show provided a lot of the back story for the films. His relationship with his father, first introduced in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, was further fleshed out with stories about his travels with his father as a young boy. His original hunt for the Eye of the Peacock, a large diamond seen in Temple of Doom, was a recurring element in several stories. At that time, George Lucas released a VHS collection of the series with the introductions removed, amounting to an implicit retcon of the segments out of existence.Books There is a series of Indiana Jones books. The series starts with him as a graduate student in Paris learning about Delphi and facing a cult who wants to bring the Oracle back. A key artifact that showed up in other books is the stone of Delphi, the navel of the world, which gives a premonition to whoever touches the stone too long with their bare skin. It may also have the ability to heal, as it healed the Greek Kings limp. Indy marries a Scottish woman named Deidre, only to have her die soon after in a plane crash in the Amazon. He met Deidre in the second book, which dealt with the Delphi stone being stolen and wizards trying to use it to take over the world by placing it in Stonehenge. Indy meets some of the main people of the roaring twenties such as Al Capone. He had a best friend named Jack Shannon. Shannon marries a psychic who "sees" by touching a plank from Noah's Ark. We find out why Indy decides to be an adventurer. He majored in Archeology, but enjoyed the adventure of the Delphi incident.Video games The character has appeared in several officially licensed video games, beginning with adaptations of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and two adaptations of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - one action oriented, one with a more overt adventure bias.Following this, the games branched off into original storylines with Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, and Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, which sets up Indy's companion Wu Han and the search for Nurhaci's ashes seen at the beginning of Temple of Doom. The first two games were developed by Hal Barwood and starred Doug Lee as the voice of Indiana Jones, while Emperor's Tomb had David Esch fill the role.A new Indiana Jones video game is in development by LucasArts, and is expected to coincide with the release of the upcoming fourth film.Another game, Lego Indiana Jones: The Videogame is scheduled for Summer 2008.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a 2008 adventure film. It is the fourth Indiana Jones film and the twenty-sixth chronologically in the character's film and television appearances. It is directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by George Lucas and stars Harrison Ford in the title role. It also stars Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Karen Allen. Set in 1957,the film centers around the mysterious crystal skulls, and pits Indiana Jones against agents of the Soviet Union.The film was in development hell since the 1989 release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, because Spielberg, Lucas and Ford wanted the best script possible. Screenwriters Jeb Stuart, Jeffrey Boam, M. Night Shyamalan, Frank Darabont and Jeff Nathanson wrote drafts, before a script by David Koepp satisfied all three men in 2006. Shooting finally commenced on June 18, 2007, and took place at locations in New Mexico, New Haven, Connecticut, Hawaii and soundstages in Los Angeles. In order to keep aesthetic continuity with the previous films, there will be minimal use of computer generated imagery and more of a reliance on traditional stuntwork, with Ford performing many of his own stunts.
