Well, well, well. The names James Cagney but my friends call me Jimmy or Red. I grew up in Manhattan's upper east side. I got a rep as a street fighter and although some of the guys I used to pal around with back then ended up in prison (one guy even ended up in the electric chair) I managed to keep my nose clean. I went to Columbia University and tried the college life, but after only six months my pop died and I had to go back to work to help out the family. Soon after that I got my first paying gig in theatre. Man was that exciting. Back in September of 1922 I married my sweetheart Billie Vernon, a Chorus girl from Iowa.Since then I have been in many movies, usually playing the tought guy roll. Some of my best known have been The Public Enemy, Here comes the Navy and Angels With Dirty Faces. I did break out of the tough guy roll once in awhile. I got to play a song and dance man in Yankee Doodle Dandy which according to the Academy deserved an Oscar. MyGen Profile Generator
