So, it’s all come down to this. Somewhere, somehow, something went wrong. My life wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. I was supposed to be someone, I was supposed to make a difference. Instead, I took the easy way, the path of least resistance. I now know how wrong that was...
Inertia. The word defined my life. I’d somehow worked my way so far into a rut, that I felt there was no way out… Or at least no way out that didn’t require me to do something. And when it came to taking action… Well… “There’s always tomorrow.†I knew that there was more to life, I was just too lazy to grab it.
I mean, consider the typical middle-aged American man. A bore for sure, but he has it all – wife, kids, the works.
I thought once, that I’d have a family someday, too...
But he left. For awhile nothing changed, I just played the role I’d been assigned, went through the motions... My experience with Will clinched it. It ripped out my heart, and the hole's still there. It's a gap I really haven't even tried to fill. It was easier to just tow the line than to make any drastic changes. Life was empty, meant to be endured rather than enjoyed.
Then, I got sick. It hit me suddenly but hard. Everyday I woke up feeling a little bit weaker. I checked into the hospital for tests and hoped for the best...
...You'd think I would have known better.
All of the “What ifs…?†of life went to hell in one fell swoop.
What if I had ended up marrying Will?
What if I had aspired for a higher position at work?
I always thought that one day, I'd get my life together. Now that day was stolen from me, and I plunged into despair. In the end, even I couldn't pretend that nothing happened.
My anger bled out of me as the blackness rushed to replace it.
No sanctuary gave me comfort.
Hopeless.
Worthless.
I was finished.
I was done listening to the rules.
There was only one way out.
I was reborn.
The “old†Louis surfaced every now and again… But not for much longer. As far as the world was concerned, my former self was just someone dying on the inside. After all, who was going to miss one insignificant person?
Now that I pay more attention to others around me, they’re wasting their lives just like I did, contenting themselves with dreams of a future that might never come.
I know now what my purpose is. Most people don’t understand how fleeting and valuable this existence truly is. I’m here to teach the world how to appreciate it, one person at a time.
So, it’s all come down to this. Somewhere, somehow, something went wrong. My life wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. I was supposed to be someone, I was supposed to make a difference. And now, I will…
