brazilian jiu-jitsu, anything medieval or ancient, reading, thinking, stupid computer sites, escaping reality as often as possible------ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a very practical, no nonsense, fighting / self-defense system that incorporates the use of chokes, joint manipulation, bone breaks and muscle locks in order to force an opponent to stop attacking, retreat or submit. It differs from most other martial arts in that there is little to no striking and that it is effective despite ones size or weight. In the no holds barred arena BJJ has proven itself to be dominate against all other forms of martial arts. The object in BJJ is not necessarily to inflict damage, although this will definitely result if the opponent refuses to submit, but rather to prevent injury and force an end to the conflict.Aside from the self-defense aspects, BJJ is a sport unto itself providing its practitioners an intense one-on-one competition (sparing) in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. In BJJ this is called "Rolling..." as in, all around the mat. It's for this that many seasoned veterans, and those new to the sport, find it so addictive. BJJ is also infinite in that you never stop learning, refining or perfecting your style and techniques. Although the theory and principles behind techniques are the same for everyone, you must learn to make them work for you by rolling. Since there is no vicious bone-to-bone contact, and no deadly, mystic "hand of death" techniques-- you get to train your technique much the same as you would use it on the street. Thus making you truly proficient and prepared regardless of your size or weight. img
