In the beginning of 1992, seven musicians – six men, one woman – launched a new band named SUBWAY TO SALLY. Hard rock music with German lyrics and arrangements with unusual instruments such as bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, lute and violin were the trademarks of this band and made it the precursor of a new musical movement.
Still a lot of bands, using elements of European folklore and medieval music within their songs, refer to that influence up to date.Through live concerts all over Germany, SUBWAY TO SALLY got a loyal fan base quickly. Already in August 1993, recordings for the first CD took place in a Dutch studio. The first album showed up at the end of 1993, a second one followed in the beginning of 1995. The band toured sedulous and gained the reputation of being one of the best live bands from Germany. At the South by Southwest music fair in Austin/Texas, SUBWAY TO SALLY soon attracted attention. The band then also toured through Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands. With the third album "Foppt den Dämon" (="Fob the demon"), released early 1996, SUBWAY TO SALLY entered a new chapter: They signed their first major deal with BMG Munich and released the two studio albums "Bannkreis" (="Spell") and "Hochzeit" (="Marriage"), the live album "Schrei" (="Scream") and a best of album at the end of the contract duration. Extensive tours and open air concerts remained an important instrument of SUBWAY TO SALLY all along, making their fan base grow constantly.Beside BMG, almost every big record label offered contracts to SUBWAY TO SALLY. The band decided to sign with Universal and recorded the album "Herzblut" (="Heart's Blood") in 2000. The record got in stores on April 1st 2001 and entered the German album charts on position 15. In 2002, a nomination for the most important German music prize "Echo" in the category "New Metal national" followed. Another highlight marked a trip to Mexico where SUBWAY TO SALLY played several sold-out concerts. In the first ten years of their existence, SUBWAY TO SALLY sold about 230.000 CDs and got featured on 80.000 sold samplers. On March 10th 2003, the current album "Engelskrieger" got released. For the first time in the band's history, an album broke the Top 10 of the charts: "Engelskrieger" managed it to reach position 9 in the German album charts in the first week. An extensive tour for the album followed with 12 employed crew members beside the musicians.SUBWAY TO SALLY sold more than 60.000 tickets only for their indoor concerts last year. Altogether with the open air gigs 2003, more than 250.000 fans experienced SUBWAY TO SALLY live. The final concert of the "Engelskrieger" tour in the Columbiahalle Berlin was filmed and released as DVD together with two hours of bonus material in November 2003.2004 will go down in the band's history as the year of great changes: With their contract running out, SUBWAY TO SALLY could look for new label partners and inked a deal with Nuclear Blast, Germany's only still-growing record company. The new album, Nord Nord Ost was released august 21.
