Garments!
Hey its BlazeyI aint gonna begin to explain how hard I think it is to write about myself, so here goes.
I started way back in 1997 playing Jump Up Drum N Bass, I had fun but got fuck all bookings, it was a hard scene to break into and DnB DJs were 2 a penny.
Beleive it or not I probaly wouldnt be playing Grime/Dubstep/Bassline if it wasnt for my bredrin Justin (Who was in a boyband singing Pop, ironic eh!). He lent me a Mike Ruffcutt Lloyd tape from La Cosa Nostra (RIP Peter), I kept that tape for fucking years, to be honest its probaly still in the shoebox inna di shed.
Thats when my love for Garage became apparent, the more tapes I listened to the more I was obsessed with it, big up to the bootleg tape seller in Bristol! To be honest I wasnt a big fan of the lady friendly vocals, for me it was all bout the tough 2 step/4x4 instrumentals.
Got my first booking at my bredrin Jelani's birthday bash, from there it began, promotor after promotor booked me. Man was everywhere.
The scene got grimier, and so did I, Blazey moves with the times ya see. I took risks and stuck to my guns playing Grimey Garage (8-Bar, Eski, Sublow), all the other Garage DJs round here kept playing tried and tested old skool anthems.
Ill be the first to admit, it was a big risk, I didnt get many bookings in the commercial clubs. Dimensions/Club UK was my training ground, and yeh It was sometimes dry as fuck, but there was times when that place was LIVE! (Me playing "I luv you" and "Eskimo" to everyone fresh back from Napa the year it came out) Those were the days! Big up to Heartless for booking me for a few of their dances at the club, man shown me respect.
Anyway, you still awake? This shit is even kinda boring me now :P
I hooked up with a dude called Paul who put on raves in Bristol/Cardiff called "Total Garage", he took me on as a resident and there I met a lot of people in the scene, I had dubs galore (This was when Dubs were a special ting in Grime, before everything was available for download on DC++). Paul vanished, dunno why, he is still alive I think so its all bless. lol
Now the biggest move was seeing a flyer for a small night in Miss Millies, it was for a night called Context in Bristol, the music policy included "FWD/Dubstep". Me being smart thought it would be good to hook up with the promotor as our sounds were interlinked. The promotor was a guy called Pinch. Me and this lanky lad hooked up and had a few beers and brainstormed a few ideas for a night called "Subloaded". A mix of Dubstep and Grime, the first night of its kind out of London to be honest. The first event was a complete success, Plasticman came and fuuuuucked it up.
Subloaded was a big big influence to everyone who was interested in Dubstep/Grime in Bristol. Pinch became an overnight leg end and a good friend. From there I was the dude to book in Bristol for Grime (I was anyway, but these Dubstep ravers loved my sets, :D).
Now its 2008, I have done BARE tings (Joined H.E.N.C.H, finally got my shit together proper, merking rave after rave), so many I cant even remember most of it. And to be honest if I wrote everything you probaly would of fallen asleep by the time you finished lol
I GOTTA WASH UP NOW, ILL UPDATE THIS MORE TONIGHT!
Make Jakes some P!
