I think country music is a direct result of Adam and Eve disobeying God in the Garden of Eden. It's the only explanation for such an obnoxious creation. With that out of the way...the Los Straitjackets are legends in our time. Max Collins, formerly the singer/bass player of Eve6, is one of the best lyricists of this generation and that includes all genres. Tony Royster Jr. is the best drummer in the world...check him out. Jurassic 5 is on point. When it comes to originality no one tops Tenacious D...hillarious yet they will still rock "yer" socks off. Kanye is a self absorbed narcissist, but he probably deserves to be because his music is timeless. Most people already use his first name only when referring to him. That speaks volumes right there. Being a Kanye fan I have also acquired an unwavering respect for Jay-Z. he may be a "bita' not a writa'," but he's better than me. Another "rapper" I hold in very high regard is Talib Kweli. The man is the Jerry Seinfeld of Hip Hop. He speaks the truth like no other and makes it sound damn good in doing so. Mos Def is up there as well (Black Star is one of the best hip hop duos ever). Wyclef Jean may be the only man alive with a more eclectic taste for music than myself...that is a good thing. I think Ray Charles should be referred to as "The King" rather than Elvis. He is the reason that "Wayfarer" sunglasses are cool...well, him and the Blues Brothers. Finger Eleven is pretty damn good. Our Lady Peace WAS good. While we're in the vicinity...no one writes songs like they used to. Zeppelin, The Who, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (Suite Judy Blue Eyes), Jethro Tull, Joe Walsh, Yes, Frank Zappa, etc. No one today even comes close. It's not to say that I don't like today's music. In fact I do enjoy a good spot of it. Probably enough to make this rant about twice as long. It is just that they are all cut from the same mold these days. Except SystemOAD and formerly Rage Against the Machine, but of course we all know what happened there. There might be a few others but odds are the ones you would mention I wouldn't agree with...try me though. Tool and A Perfect Circle are probably two groups that I should probably mention in that same breath. Tool particularly. I know they're both fronted by MJK, but I do prefer Tool for some reason. I'm not a big fan of all of these guys who carry their acoustic guitars around with them everywhere either. Jason Mraz can play, but Johnny Lang was ten times better and he never got near the hype. I forgot to mention Pink Floyd earlier (Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered together in a cave grooving with a pict). For all of you folks who are depressed and wear too much black. Rather than taking it out on your eyelids and eardrums with too much eyeliner (or any if you're a guy. the crow was a great movie, but come on guys, seriously) and that rubbish you refer to as metal, try listening to some Robert Johnson or Lightnin' Hopkins. These cats actually had something to be down about. At least something more than their mom not letting them have the car so they can go smash mailboxes with bats and toilet cleaner bombs. It's called Blues, but if there is anything that can make you feel a little better about YOUR situation then this might just be it. Now all you need to work on is your bunk ass wardrobe situation. They're saying pink is the new black. I'm also a big fan of classical music. Tchaikovsky is sweet. He really knew how to end a song. It was almost like he was conducting a fireworks show and he always had the best Grand Finale. "Capricio Italien" is probably my favorite "tune" ever. Either that or "Moonlight Sonata." I know "Sonata" isn't Tchaikovsky. The "1812 Overture" is also some good shit. I also really like George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," and I am also a big fan of Chopin (Those of you who know how to pronounce that picked up the rhyme right?). Of course there are always the others..."Marriage of Figaro," "William Tell Overture," etc. They're all real "classics." Rimshot please? Seriously though, I need to stop. I could go on for days and if you want to shoot the shit then I am game. Finally, if you want to feel like a "real man" then you should listen to Frank Sinatra. That's just a recommendation for all of you puffed up, patriotic, Toby Keith fans out there and by the way, if you want to save a horse then go start a picket line outside of your nearest glue factory.
Raging Bull, The Last Dragon, Anything by Quentin Tarantino, The Great Escape, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou ?, Tombstone, Bull Durham, This is SPINAL TAP, The Crossroads (not Britney Spears...this one has Ralph Machio and Jamie Gertz), Back to the Future Trilogy, Godfather I and II, Three Kings, Ray, Desperado, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, A League of Their Own, Ocean's Eleven, The Doors, Harlem Nights, A Bronx Tale, Slingblade, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Rudy, 61*, The Ladykillers, Malcolm X, Gods and Generals, Gettysburg, Dead Man on Campus, Gladiator, The Wall, The Fox and The Hound, Alice in Wonderland, 84 Charlie MoPic (THX JOSH), Tour of Duty, Dances With Wolves, Kevin Smith movies (hardcore cliche these days), Transformers, ...I'll get back to this one
FOOD NETWORK (Good Eats, BBQ w/Bobby Flay, Boy Meets Grill, Everyday Italian, Iron Chef America, 30 Minute Meals)! I also enjoy this show called KUNG FAUX that used to be on Fuse, but now I have to buy the DVD's. Planet Earth. Anything along the lines of survival, ghost hunting, or with hyenas and lions fighting.
Yeah...Um...not so much these days. I read enough in college. Does "1848: The Revolutionary Tide in Europe" count? Come to think of it... I would like to find a book on golf course design.
Charles, Bam, Teddy, and Paddington. I like bears. You got beef with that?
