My name is Steve Line, founder of Project 19 and here is our story. It all started 28 years ago when we were young students attending New Dorp H.S. (Classes 80-83). We were friends that shared the same love and passion for music. We’ve played several gigs together and as the years passed, we all went our separate ways. Some of us settled down and had families of our own, some went on to experience the music world on other levels, and some did both. All in all, music was and still is a big part of our lives. In April 2007, I put together a reunion dinner, and for most of us, we haven’t seen each other in over 20+ years. But, who would have thought that although time had moved on, the special bond of friendship never skipped a beat. When I mentioned that I was planning a fundraiser concert for the Nalitt Institute for Cancer and Blood Related Diseases, nineteen musicians came forward with no questions asked and said “I’m in†(Hence the name ‘Project 19). Because of the amazing talent and dedication in the room that night, I knew in my heart that this event would be a success.
UPDATE: The March 8, 2008 "A Night of the Beatles" was a huge success with 912 people in the audience - A 'SOLD OUT' show! Not only did we bring cancer awareness to the community, but we also raised over $40,000 for SIUH Cancer Center. Since then, Project 19 was asked by the Borough President's office to play at the closing ceremony of "Back to the Beach" August 28, 2008. A special thanks to Sax Player Alex Mahoney for getting our message out to all the right people. Project 19 will be getting a check for $2,500 for this show, but we all agreed to donate the full amount to the Cancer Center. That's what we're about...Giving back to the community, giving where it's truly needed.
GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME: Well, it's just that - Every concert seems to get better and better. Our 'Back to the Beach' concert was HUGE! 12,000 to 15,000 people came out to the show and we had such a great time. Again, the money we made, we donated to the cancer center. Now we are getting ready to kick rehearsals in for our March 2009 'Remembering The Classics of the 70's'. Our new goal is to raise $60,000!
