They forced the Tibetan government to sign a treaty using the threat of a military force, which is illegal under international law. As early as 1952 the Tibetan people started uprising against the Chinese. one big uprising in 1959 was put down by the PLA, which claimed to of killed 87,000 people between March of 1959 and October of 1960.Thousands of Tibetans have fled into exile, including the Dalai Lama. Tens of thousands of more were sent labor camps. The Chinese called this "reteaching through labor". The schools have even been stripped of their language and are now forced to be taught in Chinese.1.2 million Tibetans are estimated to have been killed since the start of this in 1950. Between 1950 and 1984 it is estimated that 260,000 people have died in the labor camps. Torture involving electric shock batons are common and have resulted in death among many of their victims. China does not allow independent observers to watch public trials. Only 2% of these trials are won by the defense.In 1995 the Chinese authorities rejected the child recognized by the Dalai Lama as the rebirth of the Panchen Lama, and installed their own candidate. The true Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and was replaced by Gyaincain Norbu who takes orders from Bejing.It is estimated that half of the lumber in Tibet has been taken for use in China. Tourists have reported seeing up to 60 trucks an hour leaving full of lumber. China has admitted to dumping nuclear waste in Tibet.
