I am here for Friends

About Me

In 1967, seven young women were selected as the first USC Song Girl squad. These talented students walked onto the field of the Los Angeles Coliseum to cheer on the Trojan Football Team to victory, starting one of the most storied traditions in the history of collegiate sports. Some forty years later, after numerous National Championships for both the Football Team and the Song Girl squad (also known as the USC Song Leaders), the women, now numbering twelve, look resplendent as ever in their trademark white uniforms trimmed in Cardinal and Gold. The Song Girls, who perform three dozen new dance routines each year, appear at all football games as well as basketball and volleyball games. In addition, the squad appears at rallies, university and alumni functions, and conducts its own Junior Song Girl camp. Media appearances include both television and radio programs and commercials. The squad also performs internationally. The squad has traveled to Italy, Austria, France, Hungary, Czech Republic, Japan, China and Australia. The Song Girls, together with the USC Trojan Marching Band, are the most visible public face of the University, and function as the ambassadors of spirit and good will for the Trojan Family.
What makes these young women so remarkable? The Song Girls hold themselves to a higher standard than that of many other squads. They work constantly to ensure that their choreography is innovative and exciting, with the expectation that every performance is better than the last. The members strive to maintain the image of the squad in their personal lives as well; they are well known and recognized anywhere they go, especially on campus and in the USC community. The Song Girls are highly committed and practice five days a week in addition to performances at sporting and other events. The squad works closely with the Trojan Marching Band. Each week during football season, the Song Girls must learn and perfect new choreography for different half-time routines to the music played by the USC Band.
The road to becoming a USC Song Girl is long and difficult. Each member has had extensive dance training in jazz and ballet. Many have been dancing since childhood, and most were song leaders or cheerleaders in high school. Unlike other college cheer teams, the Song Girls are primarily a dance squad. The emphasis is on personality and presence, while the actual cheering is left to the USC Spirit Leaders.
Being a Song Girl is a wonderful experience. It provides a unique opportunity to become a part of the heritage of the University. The world famous Song Girls are instilled with a sense of pride and confidence and gain valuable knowledge about how to work as a team. The friendships they make are an invaluable part of the college experience. These women will always look back upon their years as Song Girls with a remarkable sense of pride, accomplishment and love.
For almost 40 years, the USC Song Girls have been considered as the “Crown Jewel of USC Spirit.” Their unique and world-wide reputation is well deserved. They are an integral part of the University of Southern California’s official spirit groups, together with the Trojan Marching Band. The Song Girls and the Marching Band have been the public face of USC Spirit, a tradition of uncompromising excellence that spans almost four decades.
The USC Song Girls have consistently portrayed an image of class, sophistication and cutting edge choreography that is befitting a great national university. They have loyally supported USC Athletics at all home and away football games, women’s and men’s basketball games, and a variety of other sporting events. They also appear at numerous athletic fundraising, alumni, philanthropic and support group events, i.e., Pete Carroll’s Coach’s Tour, Trojan Club events, golf tournaments, kickoff events, charities and special celebrations. Examples of special celebrations have included Chinese New Years’ Day Parades, the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia, the 2005 World Expo in Japan, and the 2006 Music International Celebration in Italy.
The USC Song Girls are the most photographed spirit group in the country. They have been featured in every medium, including television, radio, and cable, for both programs and commercials, and print. The Song Girls appeared in the last year on the following television networks: ABC, NBC, ESPN, Fox Sports Net, ESPN2 and TBS. Cable appearances include Lifetime TV and the Discovery Channel. Television show appearances during the past year include The O.C., The Scholar, Field of Dreams, and Cheerleader Nation.

Class Standing: Junior
Major: Business Administration
Year on squad: Second
Hometown/High School: Cathedral City, CA—Cathedral City High School
Other School Activities: My first year at USC I participated in the USC Repertory Dance Company and the Marshall Business Student Government (MBSG).
Career Goals: Upon my graduation, I am planning to attend graduate school and earn my MBA degree. I aspire to become the Chief Executive Officer of my own business, hopefully in the field of biotechnology. I am really interested in Autism and hope to contribute something to that field of research one day. I also have a dream to open my own dance studio and continue sharing my passion for performing arts with children.
Person with the most influence on my Life and why: These people not only have influence on my life, but they all inspire me daily. First are my mother and father. I have truly come to appreciate all of their hard work, guidance, and love. Together with my little sister, they create the support system that motivates and encourages me to achieve everything I set my mind to. My Aunt Pat, my Aunt Teri and my dance teacher Ms. Kim are constant reminders to me of what it means to be truly grateful, positive, fearless, and compassionate. Thank you all for just being you!
Hobbies: I love dance and I love teaching dance! I like spending time with my boyfriend, my little sis, my friends and my family. I like writing, whether it’s an analytical paper or just a letter. My favorite movies are The Notebook, What Women Want, and Top Gun. I love The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and all of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels. I’m hooked on Grey’s Anatomy, CSI, and Sex and the City.Currently at the top of my iTunes playlists are Madonna, James Blunt, Mariah Carey, Jimmy Eat World, Ben Lee, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fall Out Boy. I can never get enough salmon, angel hair pasta, or pineapple orange juice! As far as hobbies go, I like trying to keep my plants alive and anything that has to do with pictures (from photography to Photoshop to scrapbooking).
I am happiest when: I’m with the people I love most. I’m also happy when I’m out on the dance floor or stage or field and I can simply focus on a particular dance and the emotions I’m expressing through the steps. I also love desert nights. There’s nothing better than the sweet smell, the warm air, and a clear sky full of stars.
I am most proud of: My admission to USC, the honor of becoming a Song Leader, and my will to get through anything!
Dance/Cheer experience: I started dancing with the Palm Springs Ballet Company at the age of six. I fell in love with ballet and it created the foundation for me to learn other forms of dance. I continued on with it through high school, dancing for my company and traveling to summer dance intensives. I learned jazz, modern, lyrical, and hip hop around age 12. In high school, I was on the CCHS Song Team and got the opportunity to dance jazz and pom as an individual and with my team at national dance competitions. I have been both Captain and Co-Captain of the CCHS Song Team and been named a UDA All Star three times.
Best word that describes me: Zealous.
Favorite aspect of USC/Reason for attending USC: I fell in love with the campus, its long history, its sense of tradition, and the fact that it was in Southern California (far from home, but not too far). I absolutely loved the Trojan Family and all of the opportunities the Marshall School of Business had to offer, and it didn’t hurt that the football team wasn’t too bad. But most of all I knew I couldn’t give up dance, so when I found out that USC had a Song Team, I knew this University was for me!
Favorite aspect of being a Song Grl: I love being with my teammates and coaches! They are truly remarkable people to be around and it’s never a boring day with those girls! Of course I love dancing, especially when the song is upbeat and everyone in the crowd gets into it! I love that our school appreciates what we do and I love that I can help give back to USC in some way. I also like being able to set a positive example for all the young girls out there that look up to us!
Favorite quote: “To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch…to know even one life had breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!” -Emerson

Hometown & High School: Carlsbad, CA—Carlsbad High School

Person with the most influence on my life and why: There’s no way that I could narrow this down to one person, so I would definitely have to say my family. Although it sounds clich?, they are the ones that have been there for me through thick and thin. My parents are both extremely selfless and there’s so much that I have learned from them growing up. No matter what my goals have been, I have always been immensely supported and feel very lucky.
Hobbies: In addition to dancing, there are so many other things that I love to do. Growing up on the coast, I’ve always loved spending time at the beach. And then there’s shopping! I’m really easy going and can be completely entertained just sitting and watching my favorite TV shows and movies. I am obsessed with the show The Amazing Race and being a huge Disney fan, my favorite movie is Pocahontas. I love taking pictures and scrapbooking, because I think it is one of the best ways to relive old memories. On another note, I am obsessed with Pinkberry and red velvet cake.
I am happiest when: I am at Disneyland! Like they say, it’s the happiest place on Earth.
I am most proud of: Attending USC and having the opportunity to perform as part of the Spirit of Troy here at the university. Growing up with two USC Alumni parents, I’ve spent countless time hearing about Trojan Football and the USC Song Girls, so this is really just a dream for me. Although the year is still young, I have already experienced so many positive things with a great group of girls, and made friendships that will continue to grow throughout the rest of my years at USC.
Dance/Cheer experience: I started dancing when I was three years old at Carlsbad Dance Centre, and grew up taking many different styles of dance classes and later competing with my studio. I also started gymnastics at a young age, which sparked my interest for competitive cheerleading. I competed nationally with the CA All Stars team for two years until high school, when I decided that I wanted to take advantage of my school’s esteemed dance program. I danced all four years at Carlsbad High School, and earned two national titles in Hip Hop and Jazz. It was there that I met a very memorable coach, Carrie Smith, who not only sparked my passion for dancing, but also has taught me so much about life.
Best word that describes me: Spontaneous
Favorite aspect of USC/Reason for attending USC: In addition to being an academically challenging school, I feel like USC is so wonderful because it is a school that prides itself so much on spirit and tradition. The faculty always show the students here that they care about our education, not to mention the campus is located in beautiful Southern California. The strong social community and Greek system pushed me over the top when it came to choosing a school that I would spend the next four years at. The very first time I visited USC, I already knew that I would continue to love everything about the university.
Favorite aspect of being a Song Girl: The main reason I love being song girl is because it is one of the longest lasting traditions of the university and so appreciated by the Trojan family. Not only is it amazing to spend time with my friends and dance each day, but it is a complete honor to act as a representation of an amazing school like USC. I’ve loved performing ever since I was a little girl and there’s nothing more ideal than being in the Coliseum in front of thousands of people and dancing to the Trojan Marching Band.
Favorite memory on the squad so far: My favorite memory would have to be traveling to New Jersey/New York for the NCAA Tournament. It was so extremely exciting for USC to make the Sweet Sixteen, and even more thrilling to experience everything in person and travel across the country with some of my best friends.
Looking forward to on the squad this year: Football season!! The feeling of walking into the Coliseum and experiencing that huge adrenaline rush is just indescribable. But I have to say that as great as it is being in our home stadium, I am already counting the days until we leave for Notre Dame. Beat the Irish!
