THE STORY...
If you remember stories from when you were young, eventually, as you grow older, you start to discover new meaning behind them. Suddenly, a story about loss becomes a story also about love and the one about death is now a story about life. You look at things in a different light and in some instances, not everything seen or told is reality. This is the theme of MENEW’s album ‘Adjust Your Truth’. Lyrically it touches on subjects ranging from life and love to war and politics, from questions to answers and back again. The songs build to a huge epic sound and at other times become quiet and intimate. This is a big album, a rock album. This is ‘Adjust Your Truth’. But let’s go back in time for a moment...
Wiesbaden, Germany, 1945. For two years Arthur and Elisabeth used their home and factory to hide their Jewish family and friends from the Nazi government. Their thriving business which employed over 90 skilled furniture craftsmen and craftswomen had become a safe haven hideout for Jews during the darkest days of WWII. After the war, they left everything behind and started a new life in Hamilton, a steel working city in Canada west of Toronto.
Manchester, England, 1930. George and Bessie decide to take the long journey to the promise of North America. Living in New York for several years, they ultimately decide to move slightly north to a steel working city in Canada called Hamilton. And so, as they say, the rest is history. The two families became friends, their children meet in school and years later, have three sons; and there begins the story of the brothers of MENEW.
Shade, Key and Nathan grew up among two cities, Toronto, Canada and Angelica, New York. They formed the band on the foundation of a friendship with the purpose to write music that meant something. They developed their distinct sound in their garage and on the stage, in and around Toronto.
In 2002 MENEW recorded a three track EP which quickly caught the attention of producer Scott Mathews (Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton) in San Francisco. They headed into the studio with Scott early Fall of 2003. During recording, they met ILM / Lucas Film executive Hans Uhlig, who loved the band’s sound. Hans voluntarily put together a crew from ILM and filmed a short documentary and music video for the single ‘In Trouble’. Armed with the new recording and new video, MENEW toured west coast North America and back through Canada.
In mid 2004, they were noticed by music promoter Simon Flight who heard the band and had to get involved. MENEW and Simon joined forces to form Union Music Group, an independent record / promotion company that would focus on the band’s career.
At the dawn of 2005, MENEW were playing some of their most daring shows ever. In the midst of touring they started gaining another reputation. They dreamt up a series of guerrilla shows, from fifty foot flatbed transport trucks, to mid air concerts on a stage suspended from an eighty ton crane, creating new jobs for air traffic controllers. While this stream of concerts were taking on the fear of height and motion sickness, the band was getting ready to record the first pieces of what would become the ‘Adjust Your Truth’ album.
By the time Spring of 2005 rolled around, the boys were attracting more attention than ever. They had met with producer Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi) who had heard a few new tracks and was blown away. That summer, preliminary songs were recorded in Seattle by Rick Parashar and Christian Mock and included on a limited edition EP to coincide with tour dates that spanned L.A. to N.Y. Around the same time U2’s Vertigo Tour was in full swing. U2 invited MENEW to share the stage together during a four date stop in Toronto. The hometown crowd loved it and it was another large boost for MENEW. Their fan club tripled and record sales skyrocketed.
In the following months the eleven tracks for the album were written and on February 27th 2006, recording for ‘Adjust Your Truth’ began. Taking two months to complete, the album was released in July 2006 and was followed by a tour which stopped at a ton of dates across North America. The album has since sold thousands of copies and has had rave reviews. The first two singles ‘Lady Natural’ and ‘A Million’ have been featured on radio shows across the country which has increased itunes sales into the thousands. However this success is just the beginning of the vision MENEW has. They are mavericks. They continue to be known as one of the hardest working bands and have a growing fan base to prove it.
In a parade of innovation, imagination and realization the band makes you feel as though there is a possibility that you can save the world, or at least think you can. In a culture of hype and nonsense, reach for the sky while keeping your feet firmly planted on the ground...
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you...
