Biography.
Mary Kouyoumdjian (b.1983) is constantly dedicated to composing music that pushes the boundaries of expectation and musical tradition. She illuminates the relationship between music and film and is comfortable composing for all genres including drama, comedy, suspense, experimental, and animation. She has also written music for theatre and concert works for orchestra, electronics, and chamber ensemble that range from classical, jazz, ethnic, to avant-garde; her works have been premiered by such performers as internationally acclaimed cellist Charles Curtis, flautist John Fonville, violinist János Negyesy, the esteemed Lumina String Quartet, and several members of the New York Philharmonic and MET Orchestra.
With a B.A. in Music Composition from the University of California San Diego and an M.A. in Scoring for Film & Multimedia from New York University, Kouyoumdjian has studied composition with such composers as world renowned Chinary Ung, Steven Kazao Takasugi, Chaya Czernowin, and Marc-Antonio Consoli, film scoring with the celebrated composer Ron Sadoff and composer/orchestrator Deniz Hughes, and jazz with the legendary composer/pianist Anthony Davis and pianist/saxophonist Kamau Kenyatta. She has also studied film with French New Wave director Jean-Pierre Gorin, who, along with her musical mentors, inspired her to explore the avant-garde and “quirkier” sides of art.
Kouyoumdjian tactfully brings her own voice to film and music collaborations in order to enhance the narrative/psychological aims of the director in a fresh and unique manner. She uses a sonic pallet that is progressive and paints the screen with a new and innovative world of sound that ultimately strengthens and complements the artistic vision of the director and film.
Mary Kouyoumdjian currently resides in Los Angeles.
