WORLDTRONICS 2008
Festival of electronic music
26.11.2008 - 30.11.2008
Electronic music has no place of origin and no homeland. WORLDTRONICS owes its existence to this nomadic way of life. The festival seeks out those places where electronic music is currently at its most virulent. Like the first edition in 2007, when musicians from Japan, Congo, Chile and Israel were invited to Berlin, this year's event also shows that there is no standard definition of electronic music. While the Romanian participants prefer to concentrate on Cologne-style minimalism, the Pakistani musicians exude their fascination more through Krautrock and psychedelia. Anyone expecting baile funk and lounge bossa nova from the Brazilian contingent will be vindicated to a limited extent only. And as far as New Zealand goes, it seems anything is possible. In order to maintain some sort of overview, WORLDTRONICS has brought its curators into position. The Brazilian musicians were selected by the legendary New York avantgardist Arto Lindsay . Heiko Hoffmann , editor-in-chief of the specialist magazine Groove took care of Romania, while New Zealand was chosen by Hans Nieswandt , that restless musician, DJ and book-writer, and Pakistan was looked after by HKW music chief Detlef Diederichsen . And the concerts are by no means the be all and end all of the festival:
Before, during and after the performances there will be workshops, panels and a specialist electronics market. For five whole days, electronic music will stop off at the House of World Cultures on its endless tour of the globe.
