TheNativeSoul is a fresh and talented kid hailing from the south side of Chicago. Born in the mid-80's, he grew amongst a great period of musical history. His influences range from Stevie Wonder to Queen, Herbie Hancock to Nas, David Axelrod to A Tribe Called Quest. From this sturdy background of musical mentors came his desire for hip-hop. At an early age he learned the fundamentals of hip-hop and embodied the culture completely. From lifestyle to art, TheNativeSoul surrounded himself with the humanities that are hip-hop. At age 11 he began writing in the lunchroom of Kenwood Academy on Chicago's south side, and the love only increased from there. From impromptu battles to freestyle cypher sessions at the annual Taste Of Chicago, he ventured into a world that not many his age were familiar with. With a little help from friends and family, he would set out to make that world his.
Since he didn't have the luxury of a car at his age, he began channeling his desire for rhyming through one medium he could connect to from home - the internet. In 1999 he began entering writing tournaments with some of the best writers in the world, and began to make his name known, even at his young age. As time went on he continued to learn more and more about crafting a good verse and separating himself from the stereotypical topics written by other lyricists. With a style that stood on the line between the underground, backpack movement and the streetwise, swagger-laden antithesis, he began to create his own niche.
At age 13 he began writing with a fellow classmate of his, and eventually began a crew called Ill Extreme Measures. They branched into actual vocal recording using only a copy of Cool Edit, looped beats provided from miscellaneous websites, and a 35 dollar mic. They say that the best circumstance for learning is when you've got no other options, and they did just that. They recorded song after song, and quickly realized that actually vocalizing a song was totally different than writing one. They began to learn breath control, bar structure, bridge structure, chorus structure, and other key elements to fluid song production, all at the ages of 13 and 15, respectively.
As they learned more and more about the structure of writing, the quality of recording was in desperate need of elevation. In the next 3 to 4 years they experimented with many studio setups, friends who owned equipment, and anyone who would allow them to rap for free and leave with something to critique. It was at that time, as college years commenced, that TheNativeSoul saw it fit to make a stern decision and pursue music full steam. He transferred from his Pre-Medical program at the University of Illinois to Columbia College of Chicago in order to pursue a degree in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management. Knowing that his craft wasn't where he wanted it to be, he decided to learn the ever-important business aspects of the music industry and the recording industry (yes, they are two different things.) Over the three years he studied at Columbia College, he made numerous amounts of connections with people lively and ecstatic about the industry, and used that vibrancy to continue developing his craft after class and work was done. He also began making beats during that time as well, using computer software to exercise the rhythms that swirled in his head on a daily basis.
Now a recent graduate of Columbia College, TheNativeSoul is primed to leave his mark on music lore and remove his creation from it's incubator.
