Robert Shafer

aI started playing guitar in the mid-70's after an unsuccessful bout with piano lessons. I've played acoustic and/or electric guitar in a number of bands including Southern Mix, The Carpenter Ants and The Johnny Staats Project. I still work with Johnny Staats on a regular basis in duo, trio and full band formats. Along the way, I've been fortunate to win acoustic guitar championships for the states of Kentucky (3 times), Tennessee (twice), Ohio (twice) and Alabama. I also placed first in the National Flatpicking Championship in both 1983 and 2000. Recently, a WV Luthier named Bob Thompson honored me by making a "Robert Shafer Signature Model" guitar. It's a beautiful instrument that sounds and plays as good as it looks. I've posted some pics on my photo page if you'd like to take a look. I highly recommend this guitar to anyone wanting a high quality acoustic. I also play classic country and western swing on electric guitar and pick once a week with a group called The Pourhouse Crew. I also freelance occasionally w/ Southern Mix, The Carpenter Ants and The Mountain Stage Band. In the last couple of years I've been playing some swing/jazz material with The Rick Justice Trio at Soho's, which is one of Charleston's premier restaurants. While I don't consider myself a jazz guitarist, it's fun to try and these guys are a lot of fun to pick with.....
