EMOTIONS ELECTRIC
There was no warning. During an afternoon of February 1976 the dark forces of nature unleashed their power upon earth through the form of a kind and elegant boy, later to be known with the cosmic name Vagelis.
At an early age and after watching Walt Disney’s Fantasia, Vagelis was struck with astonishment by the way that cartoons and music were engaged. It was clear to him that music and animations would play a big role in his life.
Vagelis was perfectly alright until he put his eyeglasses on and lost control ...
At the age of 14,along with his best mates, Kirk (Yekuku) and Romolo (Polyphonia) formed the noise collective Vavourodeath. The concept was to record household sounds with a microphone and a four-track recorder and then manipulate them into something else. After a small period of experimentation, Vavourodeath broke up, you see the members were too selfish to co-exist in a musical way, but friendship remains even up today.
During 1991 Mr F published the first and only issue of his fanzine, Lucifero, a tribute to the underground death / black metal scene, of which he was a big fan back then. Too much effort and love had been putted into that fanzine. It was written with a typewriter and the interviews were taken through post service (no pc’s, no internet for the masses back then). Later that year a compilation tape called Brainstorm was released with the participation of local black metal bands. Nothing could prepare him for what was about to come …
In the middle of summer 1991 Natalie fever a record from Detroit filtered into his bedroom. The label was Transmat, the track Nude Photo. He gave it a spin. Listening to it the first time was weird. The second time made it seem even more stranger. Mr F was used to listen to records that were full of violence, energy and soul. That record was devoid of soul. A couple of weeks later and after listening to weird tracks with titles like No Ufo’s, Strings of the Strings of Life, It Is What It Is, R-Theme, all made sense to him : 303, 808 and 909 were somehow encoded in his dna.
The years passed by and Mr F was a regular to clubs and parties like Troll, Terminal, Insomnia, Dom, Sunrise Zone, Oinofyta trying to figure out how that exciting music was composed. There he found another big influence : Altern8. The dirty breakbeats, bass and noise shaked him. Top Quality Full On Hardcore. There was no turning back , the black metal days were over but the dark influences were still there, so was the need to write music, mainly as a way to get rid off his inner feelings, thoughts and fears.
Armed with a Roland SD8000, R8 and DI55 started his journey into the world of music making that never ended. To him music is sound painting, emotions expressed through sound and techno music isn’t simply dance music but a series of sound experiments that often deny the logic of more uncomplicated sounds. Unfortunately nowadays techno isn’t what it used to be.
At present time Mr F is working as a producer of radio commercials and freelancer sound enginner. And of course is still trying to write the perfect 303 bassline riff. Regarding his personal goals he simply tries to be a better human being.
Respect is due …
