SRT 434... A Packaged Abstinence Program for Youth Groups and Small Groups. What is it? The SRT 434 Program is a 4-week, DVD-enhanced Bible study designed to train youth groups and small groups of teens and young adults to understand and embrace the challenge to remain abstinent until marriage. The program prepares and motivates the students to take a strong stand for sexual abstinence and battle against the cultural pressures to be sexually active. In addition, the SRT 434 Program has been designed to reach parents as part of the overall strategy to help teens delay sexual activity. Parents are the number one influencer in a teenager’s sexual decision making. While teenagers are participating in their program, parents receive materials and go through a similar study in their individual homes. The "434" in the title of the program comes from the verse inscribed on each ring, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4, which states, "It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable." Who is it for? SRT 434 is designed for guys and girls, from teenagers through young adults and their parents. What to order and when? Once the SRT 434 program has been examined and reviewed online the group leader should:order (1) Leaders package and (1) Parents Package. The leader should examine the materials when they arrive and pass the parents package around to several parents to encourage their participation as well as their teen. Once the decision is made to go forward with the SRT 434 program, the leader will order enough Student packets for his/her entire group. *Each student package includes a SRT ring as pictured above. The Student Program The SRT 434 Program contains four sessions, each following the same format of small group discussion, DVD clips from the Live Show, and strong Scripture support.Week 1 - Temptation This session looks at the obvious and more subtle ways teenagers and young adults can be tempted sexually. The SRT Bible will be examined to see how God can help young people overcome temptation in their daily lives, how to support one another and what to do when tempted to give into sexual pressure.Week 2 - How far can I go? This session is not about what is and is not acceptable according to a book of rules on sexual abstinence. Rather it is about setting boundaries and respecting one another in dating relationships. This session challenges students to move away from "What can I get away with?" and towards "How disciplined can I be in following God's plan for my life?" A student testimony from the SRT Live Event is offered on the DVD to make this message more personal.Week 3 - Consequences “There are consequences for our actions†… However, some actions can produce life-altering and life-threatening consequences. In this session we look at a range of positive consequences of abstinence and negative consequences of pre-marital sex. Students will also learn about some of the issues that come with contracting a sexually transmitted disease as well as the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy. In your small group discussions you will consider the emotional and spiritual consequences of a sexual relationship outside marriage. You will also discuss the wonderful hope for restoration of emotional scars.Week 4 - Where does God fit in? Without God, a decision to be sexually abstinent until marriage is nearly impossible. The key is for a young person to get their relationship with the Lord straightened out before making a decision to be abstinent until marriage. The SRT 434 program brings an evangelical message for the teenagers to respond to as they anticipate putting on the silver ring and making a vow to wait. The verse on the ring confirms God’s place in this decision, “It is God’s will that you be sanctified, that you avoid all sexual immorality. That you learn to control your body in a way that is holy and honorable. (I Thess. 4: 3-4) Therefore, Only when God is in control of this area of a teenagers life should we expect their life to end up being “Holy and Honorableâ€â€¦ in God’s eyes. In this session young people will learn to do just that. For prices of SRT 434 Materials, visit:www.silverringthing.com/shop.asp
The History of the Silver Ring ThingThe Silver Ring Thing is the fastest growing teen abstinence program in the United States and is rapidly gaining international recognition for its concert-style show incorporating music, lights, video, drama & comedy performances. Through this program teens are able to understand that abstinence until marriage is not only God's plan for their lives, but also the best and only way to avoid the harmful physical and emotional effects of premarital sex. By offering a message of forgiveness and new beginnings the program reaches out to those teens that have become sexually active & offers an opportunity to embrace a "second virginity."The Silver Ring Thing program was created in 1995 by Denny and Amy Pattyn as a response to the escalating numbers of teen pregnancies in Yuma, Arizona, and was moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 2000. The Silver Ring Thing leadership recognizes that the distribution of condoms or the practice of "safe-sex" will not ensure protection from the physical, emotional and spiritual problems resulting from sexual activity among teens. The only way to reverse the moral decay of any youth culture is to inspire a change in the conduct and behavior from those within the culture. Therefore, the Silver Ring Thing has developed a roll-out plan to help create a culture shift that will reach 20% of the student population and has introduced the SRT 434 programs to aid in the national and international spread and understanding of the message of abstinence.
SILVER RING THING WORLDWIDE STATSOver the past 10 years, SRT has held thousands of events in many different cities across the United States and around the world. To date, SRT has brought the abstinence message to over 250,000 students and parents, and over 85,000 students have put on a ring as a symbol of their commitment to wait until marriage. In addition, through this program, over 45,000 young people have made decisions to follow Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.Teen STDS - Just the Facts [RESOURCES] (All figures from CDC and other published reports; contact SRT for annotated listing)Of the more than 15 million new STD infections each year:two-thirds will occur in people under 25 years of ageone in four will occur in teenagersEvery year approximately 10 billion dollars is spent on major STDs other than AIDS and their complications. This cost is shared by all Americans.Today there are more than 30 STDs and over 200 strains of human papilloma virus (HPV).A British study found that HPV infects 46% of teenage girls after their first sexual intercourseHPV is directly linked to 99.7% of all cervical cancers. Nearly as many women die of cervical cancer each year as die of AIDS.Herpes increased 500% in the past 20 years among caucasian American teens.Nearly 50% of african-american teens have genital herpes.Nearly 1 in 10 teen girls has chlamydia; nearly half of all cases are girls 15-19 years old.Over 80% of teens with STDs show no symptoms and therefore never get medical attention, leaving them exposed to the risk of serious complications years later. In a national Kaiser Family Foundation survey, one out of every five sexually active teens reported that oral sex is safe sex. However, HIV, herpes, HPV, chancroid, intestinal parasites, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis A & B can all be contracted through oral sex.Condoms not only do not eliminate the risk of contracting an STD, they do little to prevent many viral infections spread by skin-to-skin contact, especially HPV and herpes. Teen Pregnancy - Just the Facts (Facts and figures from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy - September 2000)The United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy, birth and abortion in the industrialized world, costing taxpayers over $7 billion per year.More than 40% of American girls become pregnant at least once by age 20.Half of all single mothers on welfare were teenagers when they had their first child.Fewer than one third of teen mothers ever finish high school.Who's Really at Risk? - Just the FactsMore than one-third of 9th graders have had sexual intercourse.More than half of 12th graders have had sexual intercourse.More than 50% of 8th graders and 80% of 12th graders have tried alcohol. One third of 14-21 year old girls who became pregnant, reported that they had been drinking when they had sex.New studies show that clinical depression in adolescent boys and girls is related to sexual activity and drinking.Eight in ten girls and six in ten boys who were sexually active say that they wish they had waited until they were older.33% of 8-11 year olds and 49% of 12-15 year olds said that pressure to have sex is a "big problem" for them.
