Uptown Creepers was formed in 2004 as the brainchild of lead singer/guitarist/songwriter David Cruz (No-Skoto, Mr. Goody Two Shoes). In it’s earliest conception the band relied on Cruz’s knack for writing up-tempo, hook-driven ska/punk songs and catchy-as-hell lyrical harmonies to raise the eyebrows of the San Antonio ska faithful. Citing influences such as Operation Ivy and Assorted Jelly Beans, the band was a breath of fresh air in a San Antonio scene that saw it’s once abundant and diverse ska circle slowly losing momentum and giving way to the usual sound-alike bands that the Creepers had grown more and more tired of settling for and listening to.Eventually, the band began leaning more towards the punk/progressive aspect while still displaying their passion for straight ska. This new sense of direction helped establish their more horn-driven line-up which boasts horn players Mike Chia and Manny Sauceda formerly of late 90’s local ska staple Coxcomb. Throw in the sensational drumming of former Causemonauts drummer Benny Pizana and the new addition of bassist Clayton Billadeau (The Grasshopper Lies Heavy/Well Hung Missiles), and Uptown Creepers stands poised to make their mark all over again in a genre that can always use an original spark to keep it fresh. While the line-up has changed over the past 3 years, Cruz remains the “driver†of this “Cadillac 5â€. Their logic is simple: members may come and go, but this Cadillac isn’t stopping for anything or anyone. Staying true to that ideal has kept the current line-up focused on unity and progress both in their music and in their relationships as friends and band mates.
