Avon Boy Drowns After ATV Flips by Leah George
Published Sep 01, 2007
Dozens of family members and friends gathered in Avon Saturday to grieve and to comfort the family of Stone Steger. The nine-year-old boy was killed in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident Friday.
Stone’s father Chris Steger said his son may have only been nine years old, but he says Stone was built like a tank.
Chris said Stone weighed more than 90 pounds and was an experienced ATV rider.
"He's nine years old, but he's been ridin’ for four years. As a matter of fact, the way that he learned was by helping me build this pond behind me. We’d been collectin’ rocks for probably two years to build this pond. He used to drive the four wheeler towin’ the cart and that's kinda how he learned. He just really picked up on it," Chris Steger said.
Chris Steger said he and Stone logged more than 100 riding hours together on trails all over Livingston County.
He said Stone was very familiar with the terrain he was driving on Friday, and remarked that Stone was not alone. Chris said Stone's older sister was riding an ATV ahead of him and his six-year-old brother was on the back of the ATV Stone was driving.
Chris said everyone was wearing a helmet.
The Stegers believe Stone drove over a bee's nest in the ground.
"The bees apparently swarmed him and he must have gone to swat the bees and lost control of the vehicle and rolled it down the embankment," Chris Steger said.
Police said the ATV flipped over and trapped the nine-year-old face down in a small creek below.
His brother ran for help.
By the time first responders arrived, Stone had already drowned.
Chris said Stone played football, baseball, basketball and soccer. He was also a Cub Scout.
Chris said his son was really looking forward to starting 4th grade this Wednesday at Avon Primary School.
"He had everything all ready to go for school,†Chris said. “He was very excited. He was a very good student in school. And he did pretty much everything that we could ask him to do as parents, and we will miss Stoney very much. We appreciate all the support from all of our friends and family in this time of need."
The superintendent of Avon schools says grief counselors will be available to students when school starts next week.
