About Me

The Southend Jazz Co-op is an informal workshop run by a group of musicians, meeting once a week and is open to all aspiring jazz players, regardless of age or ability. The sessions are led by various tutors and focus on developing improvisational abilities and exploring a diverse spectrum of the jazz repertoire, in an atmosphere that is friendly and supportive. The common factor is a love of jazz and a willingness to learn and to make mistakes along the way.
There are regular "masterclasses" run by top jazz musicians and concerts throughout the year. Previous guest tutors have included Alan Barnes, Alan Skidmore, Trevor Tomkins, Simon Spillett, Nick Weldon, Peter King, Pete Churchill, Nikki Iles and Paul Jayasinha.

* Avant Garde jazz, including compositions by Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy

* Modal jazz
* Latin jazz
* The music of Tubby Hayes
* The music of Cannonball Adderley
* The music of Horace Silver
* The music of Thelonious Monk
* Bebop, including compositions by
Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie
* Cool jazz, including compositions by
Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan
* Hard bop, including compositions by
Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter
* Rhythmic placement and development in solos
* Intervallic ear training exercises
* Using space in your solo
* Finding 'energy points' in your solo
* Specialist saxophone masterclass
* Specialist piano masterclass, focussing on comping and the piano's interaction with the soloist
Our workshops are held every Saturday (see our events listing for details) between 10am to 1pm (with a break for refreshments) at St Michaels & All Angels Church Hall, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
