History of Beer Pong
Beer pong first appeared around 323 B.C.E. in Carthage where it was one of the highlight of the elite upper class citizens. Here small stones and pebbles were tossed in an underhand motion into four mid sized chalices. When the Romans overthrew Carthage, the game was all but lost. Forced to conceal their once great game, the Carthaginians would continue playing in the underground tunnels in and around the surrounding hills for years to come...
Various reincarnations of beer pong would pop up several more times during the course of history. The rules varied from culture to culture as regional versions of the game were adopted over time. Among them were the Ostrogoths in Germania - today's modern Germany. Around 555 C.E., these savage warriors threw gold coins into carved out skulls, filled with fermented yak blood. Next would be the peasants of pre-industrial England. With wealth being scarce, the game basically consisted of throwing dirt clods into goblets of grog (beer). Since everyone was already drunk anyway, it is believed that this was actually more of a way to deal with boredom. However, the game would regain its fame when it was introduced back into society in the parlors of Napoleonic France. But the game was slightly altered into more of a spectator's game. Here, the elite would watch as their servants tried to throw marbles into emptied bottles of wine.
Then, after an absence of several centuries, the game would resurface sometime around 1982 in the Fraternities of colleges and universities across the United States. Going under the names of Beer Pong or Beirut, the game would replace the out dated marbles with ping-pong balls. As for the wine bottles, they were replaced with more accessible, cheaper, plastic cups filled with only beer from cans or kegs.
