A San Francisco bay area native turned Los Angeles resident and enthusiast, composer and trombonist Nick DePinna is a graduate the UCLA Ethnomusicology and Music Departments, and is currently a graduate student in music composition. As a composer, Nick has been a part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Young Composers Program, as well as the SFJAZZ Young Composers Collective. Other credits include the films, "Every Rose" (2007), "ChainSmoke" (2008), and "Escape" (2009), as well as a number of arrangements and orchestrations for Kenny Burrell, Dave Bluefield, and others. As the co-founder and student director of the UCLA Contemporary Jazz Large Ensemble (www.myspace.com/uclacontemporaryjazzle), he oversaw the premiere of thirty-eight pieces of music by fifteen living composers between 2006-2009. Current projects include the "Music for Spaceports" saga, the jazz-opera "Strange Fellowe" (with Hitomi Oba and Jerome Parker), and a "JAZZ NEXUS" album for release in 2010. Other projects include involvement with the Hitomi Oba Group (featured on the album "Negai"), the Geo Valle Jazz Orchestra, the Elliot Deutsch Big Band (featured on the album "Weeknight Music"), and the Paradigm Street Band.
