The H2 Quartet, currently in residence at Michigan State University, formerly the Hyacinth Quartet of Northwestern University, draws its name from the hyacinth flower. Convention links the hyacinth flower with the Hyacinth of the Ancients, the flower of grief and mourning, first called Hyacinthus. More recently, hyacinth is also associated with a deep purplish blue to vivid violet color. The H2 Quartet was First Prize Winners at the North American Saxophone Alliance Saxophone Quartet Competition in April of 2008, First Prize Gold Medal Winners at the 2007 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and twice First Place winners at the MTNA Chamber Music Competition - Michigan. They were also named Honorable Mention at the 2008 Plowman Chamber Music Competition. In April of 2008, the H2 Quartet performed Philip Glass’s Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra with the Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra. H2 has performed in many U.S. venues, from university recital halls to Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Hall. H2 is dedicated to bringing the best of standard and new repertoire for saxophone quartet to a wide audience.
