About Me
Alternative rock band from Mexico City formed in 1995 by guitarist José Manuel Aguilera and bassist Federico Fong. Alfonso André joined them on drums for the recording of their debut album. Inspired by bands such as King Crimson, Buena Vista Social Club, Toña La Negra or Radiohead and looking for its own Mexican identity, la Barranca recorded their first album after getting a proposal from a small label called Opción Sonica in 1996. The award winning "El Fuego de la Noche" was followed by 1998's "Tempestad", released by BMG. After signing up to Universal's associate label Manicomio, the band presented its third album in September 2000. While "Rueda de los Tiempos" was getting good reviews, again, La Barranca started touring Mexico (doing concerts with bands like Los Tigres del Norte, El Tri or Café Tacuba) and the U.S. (Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix), and recently Europe, where they were the rock band selected for the Garonne Festival dedicated to Mexico in Toulouse, France."Denzura", their next album, “one of the best 2003 Latin albums†according to
Rolling Stone Magazine Top Ten, amongst other magazines. During 2004, the band also release an EP called "Cielo Protector", an innovative 5 song double album exclusive for internet. With this project La Barranca increase their independence and relationship with a pretty big and faithful fan base. Another Rolling Stone quote: “La Barranca is the most elegant band in the Mexican rock sceneâ€.During 2005 and 2006, the band present a 6th album called "El Fluir", in many parts of Mexico an U.S. One of their main shows was at at Teatro de la Ciudad in Mexico City (sold out), when they were part of the main Festival in Mexico, ‘Festival del Centro Histórico’, sharing credits with people like Bobby McFerrin.Their music maintains some of the most rich and powerful elements in Mexico’s rock scene. It is a very interesting band to listen to as it has a melancholic feel combined with some good rock and roll and Mexican popular music overtones.
