"I write for the same reason that I breathe: for if I didn't, I would die."
I am a 47 year old woman who is a writer at heart, despite the efforts of graduate school to stomp it out of my soul. I started out with goals of being a college professor in History and History of Medicine, but 13 years of "Higher Education" pretty much sent me to the funny farm.
Somewhere along the way I found that I enjoyed working in Retail, and I have been working in that area since 1993. My first retail job was in a convenience store (which explains why one of my favorite movies is Clerks). I spent 12 years at a small Lands' End Outlet in Madison, WI, ending up as an Associate Manager there.
When life intervened, I moved back to Akron, Ohio, to be nearer to my Dad, and started working at Kaufmann's, which later became part of the Macy's empire. Until recently, I was Sales Associate there, working in the Intimates Department as a bra fitter. Yes, friends, I raised boobies for a living (and for the male visitors to my profile, even you wouldn't find it to be a "glamorous" job). Still, of all of the areas of Retail in which I've worked, I enjoyed being a fitter the most, and I've met a lot of wonderful women along the way.
I should also encourage all of my visitors to support the fight against breast cancer; I lost a close cousin to that awful disease. She was only 34 and left behind three young children.
I am fortunate to work with some great people. Most of my customers are great, too, but it only takes one nasty customer to ruin one's day. This confirms what one of my former Lands' End co-workers called "The Underwear Classification System of Customers:" Most customers are "boxers," but every once in a while you get a customer who is a real "thong." I manage to keep my composure - and my sanity - by seeing the humor in human interactions, both pleasant and unpleasant.
I've been fighting the good fight with Bipolar II disorder, and I figure as long as I can keep my sense of humor I can survive anything.
As for interests, I love off-the-wall comic strips, such as Rhymes With Orange (Hilary Price does great cats), Bizarro, Non Sequitor, and Dilbert.
I'm also a fan of the Strangers in Paradise series by Terry Moore, and I'm still in mourning now that the final issue has come out. His newest effort, Echo, has recently come out, and it is quite good.
I journal every day because it helps keep me sane. Someday I will actually finish the 300+ page novel I started a few years back during a manic phase. Blogging on myspace is giving me a whole new group of readers for my essays and views on life.
I have more than a passing interest in the Tarot and have more than 20 decks that I consult. I do occasional readings for my friends.
I love tattoos -- I have eight -- and I plan on getting at least one more at some point.
Before Linus pounces on my head, I should mention that I am a hopeless "cat mommy." I am a pet person, and I've had cats, dogs, hamsters, gerbils, a rabbit, and two ferrets in my life. If I win the lottery someday, I think I'll study to be a small animal vet!

At this stage of my life I am trying to reach out more to people. This is hard, because I am a bit of a loner. I'm friendly enough to the people I work with, but I'm private and I just don't let most people get that close to me. It is a vulnerability thing, I guess. Still, I remind myself that there are a lot of truly great people out there, and I deny myself the joy of getting to know them if I don't make the effort. I'm hoping by getting onboard here that I might be able to get in touch with some of the people I've left behind and who have gone on to other places -- and maybe make a few new friends along the way.
